What is the Opportunity:
Reporting to the SVP, Finance, the Director, Insurance and Loss Control will lead the corporate insurance team and collaborate with stakeholders and business leaders across Aecon. They will be responsible for shaping insurance strategy, ensuring robust risk management practices, and driving initiatives that enhance loss control measures.
What You’ll Do Here:
Design, develop and direct the implementation of insurance and risk solutions and strategies to optimize operations, including placement of enterprise-wide insurance programs and continuously monitor and adjust insurance solutions to meet corporate requirements
Lead the negotiation and purchase of insurance policies
Lead and/or participate in joint venture project pursuits from inception at the RFQ phase to Substantial Completion and Operations & Maintenance period as applicable, this includes procurement of stand-alone insurance specialized insurance coverages (builders risk, wrap-up liability, project specific professional liability and annual insurance coverages as required)
Provide ongoing insurance expertise including claims handling, contract review, annual insurance coverages for joint venture projects
Lead and direct the placement of insurance coverages for Aecon only project pursuits for all operations and support the project team throughout the project
Review and analyze owner-controlled programs and where required negotiate improved terms and conditions with Owner to protect Aecon
Support operations in the subcontractor prequalification process
Interact with operational groups to identify, understand and analyze insurable risks and potential mitigation opportunities, and ensure coordination between project team on exposures and appropriate insurance coverage
Provide expert advice, consultation and strategic direction on insurance and loss control programs, policies, standards, guidelines and methodologies keeping abreast of emerging and best practice trends
Make recommendations to senior management for improvements to Aecon’s overall insurance and loss control program and practices
Review and analyze loss control and trending reports and use this information to design, develop and lead internal training
Responsibility for the direction and coordination of the corporate surety program and continuously drive the use of surety products to minimize the impact to the corporation’s balance sheet
Manage relationships with third party service providers (i.e.: brokers, insurers, adjusters, appraisers, external legal counsel, consultants etc.)
Prepare budgets, forecasts and financial reports including the analysis of annual insurance premiums, financial performance of insurance programs and the determination of billing rates and premium allocations
Develop internal communication and advertising strategies related to all risk management and insurance initiatives; oversee the monitoring of compliance with insurance procedures, safety and risk manuals
Lead the claims handling process for all claims below the corporate self-insurance retentions and the management of corporate losses including Property, casualty, D&O, Cyber, Crime, etc.
Work closely with the Legal team on E&O claims
Oversee all aspects of contract review related to risk, insurance and surety issues, including coordination with Legal Department
What You Bring to the Team:
Bachelor’s degree and 10+ years related industry experience, preferably in brokerage and construction risk with strong knowledge of general construction practices and provisions of construction contracts
10+ years’ experience buying and managing a portfolio of construction insurance
Experience in successfully negotiating complex claims
At least 3 years of surety and bonding program experience
Extensive experience with U.S. insurance placements
At least 5 years of people management experience
CRM and/or CIP designation preferred
Strong analytical skills, both financial and qualitative
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Effective time management skills
