The Department of Surgery, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and the University of Toronto is inviting applications for the position of an academic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon specializing in Hand Surgery, Peripheral Nerve Reconstruction and Microsurgery.
The effective date of this appointment is January 1, 2026, but can be flexible depending on the candidate.
The successful candidate will join a dynamic and collegial team of plastic and reconstructive surgeons with a major focus on hand and peripheral nerve surgery. The successful candidate will also participate in medical student, resident, and plastic surgery fellow education at the University of Toronto.
The successful candidate must have completed specialized fellowship training in hand and peripheral nerve surgery. Solid expertise in reconstructive microsurgery is also required for this position. Expertise in the management of wrist pathologies, lower extremity reconstruction, and the management of skin cancers is also an asset. The successful candidate will share in a 1:6 plastic surgery on call pool. Evidence of excellence in teaching and research is required.
The candidate’s application should demonstrate excellence in academic activities (research, quality improvement, education). The successful candidate should have a strong research track record, preferably resulting in a M.Sc. or PhD degree. The successful candidate will have an academic role of Surgeon Investigator or Surgeon Scientist.
The candidate must be eligible for appointment at the University of Toronto at the academic rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor and will participate in the educational programs and academic mission of the University of Toronto, Division of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery as a full-time member. The candidate must hold an MD and FRCSC (or equivalent specialist designation) qualification in plastic surgery and be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is one of Canada’s largest hospitals and a leader in clinical and research activities. Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is a fully affiliated academic health sciences facility of the University of Toronto and home to one of the University’s three academies for undergraduate education. Sunnybrook has an international reputation for clinical excellence in research and is an acknowledged academic leader. The Sunnybrook Research Institute hosts well established programs in basic, applied and clinical research occupying over 250,000 square feet of state-of-the-art infrastructure with annual peer reviewed grants of $100 million dollars.
The Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Sunnybrook provides all aspects of plastic surgery reconstruction, including hand surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, microsurgical reconstruction, craniofacial surgery, skin cancer care, and wound reconstruction. The Division performs at least 1000 emergent and elective cases per annum with over >6000 clinical visits per year. Many of the patients come through the Tory Regional Trauma Centre, ensuring a complex case mix of trauma reconstruction.
Annual salary will be between the range of $300,000 - $350,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience. This estimate is based on fee for service billings.
