Reporting to the Vice-President and Principal, UTM, the Dean, Student Experience and Wellbeing is the senior student affairs officer for the campus, working closely with other administrators and academic leaders to integrate student affairs leadership into the highest level of planning and strategic direction for the University of Toronto Mississauga. The Dean, Student Experience and Wellbeing coordinates and works strategically, collaboratively, and in an integrative way with senior administration from a broad range of departments on campus and through various tri-campus roles. This role is the leading strategic role related to the planning and development of student services, experience outside the classroom, student relations at UTM and issues related to the student experience across the campus. The Dean has a dotted line reporting relationship with UofT’s Vice-Provost, Students and will work closely with other senior university leaders in tri-campus institutional portfolios at the St. George campus.
The Dean, Student Experience and Wellbeing is responsible for developing the student affairs and services strategy for the University of Toronto Mississauga. These plans are developed in alignment with the campus’ strategic framework and University wide plans. Through the Student Affairs staff, the position fosters relationships with and provides guidance and advice to student governments, clubs, associations and societies. The position establishes partnerships with other University departments and external organizations to develop programming that addresses the broad needs of students. Through the Student Affairs staff, the position also provides guidance and direction pertaining to the development and delivery of specific programs and services across a broad range of funding sources and mandates, including Accessibility Services, Career Centre, Recreation, Athletics and Wellness, Health and Counselling Centre, Student Housing and Residence Life, Centre for Student Engagement, and International Education Centre, along with a comprehensive student crisis support team. This position is integrative and embraces collaboration with the academic portfolio on student success and retention initiatives. An additional area of strategic responsibility is, in collaboration with the Office of Public Affairs, fostering UTM’s connection with Mississauga, and Western Greater Toronto Area (GTA) communities through opportunities created in Student Affairs portfolios like Recreation, Athletics and Wellness, and the Centre for Student Engagement.
The Dean, Student Wellbeing and Experience, has key governance responsibilities. They serve as a voting assessor to UTM’s campus affairs committee (CAC) and a presidentially-appointed non-voting assessor to UTM’s Campus Council, where they bring forward items for recommendation and approval, such as annual budgets for student funded services and student society fees, along with updates for information, including regular portfolio reports. The incumbent also sits on U of T’s University Affairs Board and, traditionally, on the Council on Student Services, based at the St. George campus. These governance duties require significant initiative, diplomacy, and attention to detail, including raising business, policy, and procedural issues of university-wide importance.
Qualifications Required:
Education:
A Post-Graduate degree in Adult Education, Counselling, or Administration or acceptable combination of education and experience.
Experience:
A minimum of 10 years’ experience in a student service or student affairs area in a post secondary education setting, working with students and student leaders and with progressively senior management responsibilities. Experience with complex developmental issues of a young adult population, managing issues and providing effective advice and programs designed to foster student growth and success.
Skills:
Strong computer skills and experience with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Familiarity working with spreadsheets and ROSI or other similar student information database.
Other:
Superb interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and develop strong working relationships with students, co-workers, senior university administrators, and external clients. Must be a consensus builder with top notch team-building, conflict management, and investigation skills. Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills are also required. Skills in budget analysis and statistical interpretation are important to success as are strong strategic thinking skills. Recognize and maintain the confidentiality of sensitive personal and operational information. Demonstrated ability and commitment to enhancing the quality of the student experience at the post-secondary level is key.
