About the Role:
Reporting to the Transit Operations Supervisor, the Lead Hand is responsible for assisting the Supervisor with daily operations, vehicle switch-outs in addition to their scheduled driving shifts. The position requires the ability to work within a number of spheres of operation including both on road and in the office. The position requires an understanding of administrative components of the operation and requires the ability to work on several computer platforms such as payroll, internal reporting and scheduling. This position follows a 12-hour rotating schedule of 7 days on, 7 days off, alternating between day and night shifts (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM / 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)

Primary Responsibilities
Ensure accurate documentation by maintaining and submitting required paperwork, including timesheets, vacation requests, and other operational records in a timely manner
Conduct daily vehicle circle checks on spare units to ensure roadworthiness and readiness; proactively respond to vehicle breakdowns by coordinating immediate replacements or taking over runs on short notice
Report and document incidents promptly, including employee injuries, vehicle collisions, and property damage, following company protocols and completing all necessary forms and reports
Carry out on-the-road safety inspections, including safety blitzes and driver road observations, as directed by the Operations Supervisor, to support compliance and safety initiatives
Serve as the immediate point of contact for resolving operational challenges and driver concerns; escalate complex or unresolved issues to the Operations Supervisor as necessary
Provide basic troubleshooting and support for IT equipment, such as on-board tablets and smart card readers, ensuring minimal disruption to service
Perform additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Transit Supervisor to support the smooth operation of daily transit services
The ideal candidate will posses the following qualifications that include, but are not limited to, the following:
High school diploma or equivalent — post-secondary education is considered an asset
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and other standard software tools used for reporting, scheduling, and communication
Valid G-class driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract and strong awareness of road safety practices
Clear and current criminal record check — including Vulnerable Sector Screening required
Demonstrated excellence in customer service, with the ability to remain calm, courteous, and solution-focused in high-pressure or time-sensitive situations
Professional and courteous telephone manner, with strong verbal communication skills and the ability to relay information clearly and accurately
Well-developed organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and handle multiple responsibilities with attention to detail
Strong written and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively within a team and interact professionally with clients, staff, and external partners
