POSITION SUMMARY The OR Registered Practical Nurse functions as a member of the OR health care team, primarily in the scrub role, in keeping with the mission statement of the hospital, and within his/her scope of practice. The OR RPN demonstrates knowledge of general nursing theory, aseptic technique, surgical instrumentation, OR Standards of Practice and hospital policies. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES Conduct preoperative assessment of patient status as required. Provide emotional support to the family pre-operatively as appropriate. Practices according to the accepted standards from the College of Nurses, ORNAC, the Hospital and the Surgical PSU; Perform the duties of the scrub role including preparation for the surgical procedure, selection of appropriate supplies, equipment and instrumentation, aseptic handling of sterile supplies, providing assistance with draping of the patient, anticipation of the needs of the surgical team, provision of medication as required on the sterile field, awareness of appropriate safety precautions for the patient, and maintenance of the sterile field during surgery. Ensure that the surgical count is carried out before the incision is made, is correct at the end of a procedure and that the follow-up is appropriate if not, including documentation as per the policy. Assist with positioning of the patient, application of padding, positioning aids, warming devices, and security aids post surgery. Complete computer charting and cataloguing of specimens as required. Carry out post-surgical routines within the RPN role as required, including appropriate loading of used equipment on the case cart, and provision of assistance with theatre between-case cleaning. Provide preceptorship for post-diploma RPN students in the scrub role, as they complete their clinical requirements. Participate in the orientation of new staff. Keep abreast of best practices by participation in professional growth activities: staff inservices and education days, surgical and nursing journals, new OR surgical procedures, or in collaboration with the OR Educator. RÉSUMÉ DES FONCTIONS Le ou la titulaire est un membre de l'équipe de soins de santé en salle d'opération, jouant principalement un rôle d'instrumentiste, conformément à l'Énoncé de mission de l'hôpital, selon les normes de la portée de sa pratique. La personne retenue fait preuve d'une connaissance de la théorie générale des soins infirmiers, de la technique aseptique, de l'instrumentation chirurgicale, des normes de pratique au bloc opératoire et des politiques de l'hôpital. RESPONSABILITÉS PRINCIPALES Effectuer l'évaluation préopératoire de l'état du patient au besoin; Fournir un soutien émotionnel à la famille avant l'intervention chirurgicale au besoin. Practiquer conformément aux normes acceptées de l'Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers de l'Ontario, de l'Association des infirmières et infirmiers de salle d'opération du Canada, de l'Hôpital et de l'unité de chirurgie pédiatrique; Exécuter les tâches d'instrumentiste, y compris la préparation des procédures chirurgicales, la sélection des fournitures, de l'équipement et des instruments appropriés, et la manipulation aseptique des fournitures stériles; fournir de l'assistance au drapage du patient, anticiper les besoins de l'équipe chirurgicale, procurer les médicaments au besoin dans le champ stérile, s'assurer que les précautions appropriées sont prises pour le patient et maintenir un champ stérile durant l'intervention chirurgicale; S'assurer que le compte chirurgical est effectué avant l'incision, qu'il est correct à la fin de la chirurgie et que le suivi est approprié, et s'il ne l'est pas, joindre la documentation requise conformément aux politiques; Aider à positionner le patient et à mettre des coussinets, des aides de positionnement, des appareils de réchauffement et des dispositifs de sécurité après la chirurgie; Compléter le dossier électronique et cataloguer les spécimens au besoin; Réaliser les routines postchirurgicales conformément aux fonctions de l'infirmière auxiliaire autorisée au besoin, y compris le chargement de l'équipement utilisé dans le chariot de cas, et aider au nettoyage de la salle d'opération entre les cas; Offrir un préceptorat aux infirmières auxiliaires autorisées nouvellement diplômées dans le rôle d'instrumentiste pendant qu'elles complètent leurs exigences cliniques; Participer à l'orientation du nouveau personnel; Se tenir au courant des meilleures pratiques en participant aux activités de croissance professionnelle : formation en cours d'emploi et journées d'éducation, revues portant sur la chirurgie et les soins infirmiers, nouvelles procédures chirurgicales en salle d'opération ou collaboration avec l'éducateur en salle d'opération; Participer aux activités d'amélioration de la qualité au sein de l'unité; Identifier les risques potentiels dans le contexte périopératoire.
