Position Summary: The Distributed Digital Music Archives and Libraries (DDMAL) lab at the Music Technology Area of the Schulich School of Music is hiring a research associate to work on the LinkedMusic project (https://linkedmusic.ca). LinkedMusic (https://linkedmusic.ca/) is a seven-year research partnership grant funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, headed by Ichiro Fujinaga, Principal Investigator. The aim of the LinkedMusic Project is to link music databases through metadata schemas: structures for organizing information stored in a database. The team brings together cutting-edge researchers with the digital musical resources and expertise of partner institutions, including DIAMM, RISM, Cantus Database, Cantus Ultimus, Global Jukebox, and MetaBrainz. Over the course of the project, the research team will develop tools to convert existing metadata schemas into a flexible and extensible format using Linked Data principles, in addition to creating a virtual instrument museum with Linked Data content. The research associate will help expand vocabularies for Linked Data in music and improve online queries in several specific research fields (e.g. liturgical sources of chant and early music, liturgical occasions for musical performance, book history, and organology). In addition, the research associate will help supervise a research group of graduate and undergraduate student developers working with databases in other music research content areas, and address problems reconciling metadata between databases using WikiData identifiers and OpenRefine. They will also collaborate with a variety of content teams from partner institutions, including liaising with organizers of the Cantus Database (a database focused on sources of chant). The research associate will be expected to participate regularly in the research group through weekly meetings as well as through their own independent research. Qualifications: • Demonstrated previous experience working with mixed teams of software developers and humanities researchers • Experience working with OpenRefine, WikiData, and SPARQL • Experience testing and reporting software user issues e.g. on GitHub, and communicating them to both developers and software users • Understanding of broad musical subject knowledge (e.g. performers, sources, instruments from various cultures and/or periods) and its possible representation within databases, including in non-English languages • Significant knowledge of classification of musical sources (e.g. liturgical books, music libraries) and their contents (e.g. liturgical occasions) • Significant experience working with the Cantus Database of liturgical chant; extensive knowledge of medieval liturgical music and its sources • Track record of publications and presentations in relevant fields • Track record of supervision of students • Work with large, multi-part projects or partnerships • Knowledge of multiple languages Before applying, please note that to work at McGill University, you must be both authorized to work in Canada and willing to work in the province of Quebec at the campus where the position is based / located.
