Job Description JOB TITLE: Lead Data Engineer SALARY: £90,440 - £106,400 LOCATION(S): Halifax HOURS: Full time WORKING PATTERN: Hybrid, 40% (or two days) in our Halifax office About this opportunity This is a key role as part of the Risk Foundations, Consumer Data Lab which creates significant value to the Group, unlocking the potential of the Group’s Data Strategy! As a Lead Data Engineer, you’ll be responsible for leading a talented group of engineers, guiding them through the complexities of engineering and owning the delivery of robust, scalable solutions! You'll use your technical expertise to support product performance, reliability, and security in line with our strategic vision. This role will give you the opportunity to work with modern tech and data stacks, and cloud-based architectures, while collaborating closely with multi-functional teams to drive continuous improvement and operational excellence. Key responsibilities: Data Product Development: Design, build, and maintain scalable, secure, and high-quality data products using clean, maintainable, and efficient solution designs aligned with standard methodologies. Technical Leadership: Lead implementation reviews, ensure quality assurance across delivery, and share knowledge across teams. Tooling & Process Optimisation: Evaluate and recommend tools, technologies, and processes to enhance the data platform and engineering practices. Problem Solving: Apply advanced analytical skills to resolve complex data issues, technical challenges, and bugs. Mentorship & Coaching: Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers within the lab and across the wider data engineering community. DevOps & CI/CD: Champion DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines to ensure robust, automated, and efficient deployment processes. Governance & Custodianship: Ensure compliance with data governance standards and take accountability for the custodianship of data assets produced and consumed by the platform. Team Collaboration: Communicate effectively with multiple teams and stakeholders to align on priorities and deliverables. What you'll need Extensive data engineering experience and implementing data management systems. Strong data literacy, with hands-on analytics and development skills. Expertise in data modelling and visual system design. Proficiency in SAS, BigQuery, and cloud-native architectures. Experience with Tableau, Power BI, or Looker for data visualization. Solid knowledge of data governance, architecture, and lifecycle management. Familiarity with automation tools and observability frameworks. Proven leadership, team coaching abilities, and stakeholder influence skills to drive strategic outcomes.
