As 2nd Class Shift Engineer, you will oversee the operation and maintenance of our nominal, 260-megawatt, North Battleford Combined Cyle facility that is operated as a baseload generating station. You will report directly to the Chief Engineer. This role is on-site at Northland’s North Battleford Energy Centre, located approximately 15km southeast from the city of North Battleford, Saskatchewan. This role requires relocation to the Battlefords area. Key Responsibilities: Oversee the plant HRSG, pressure equipment, piping, and related equipment as per Saskatchewan Boiler and Pressure Vessel Act and Regulations. Supervise shift operations by providing direction to assistant shift engineer(s) and issue work permits to maintenance staff and contractors. Maintain shift operating logs and records as required by the regulation. Operate BOP using an Ovation DCS, and plant turbines, both the General Electric 7FA.04 gas turbine and the Alstom steam turbine, through the use of the GE Mark VI e DCS. When needed, perform Assistant Shift Engineer duties, such as equipment rounds, water tests, LOTO, and operate the site water treatment plant. Implement plant and company policies including the coordination of emergency response. Monitor and remotely start & stop Northland Power’s Spy Hill Generating Station LM6000 gas turbine units (2) via an Ovation DCS and the GE HMI’s. Communicate with the Grid Control Centre and implement requests within stringent timelines. Coordinate preventative maintenance tasks, inspections and troubleshooting. Work various shifts and occasional overtime, if required, and assist with the annual plant outage maintenance and coordination. Recommend plant betterment items to improve overall plant efficiency, reliability, and safety. Oversee the safe handling and transfer of bulk chemicals, as necessary. Ensure chemical analysis and chemical control for steam, boiler water, cooling and condensate systems, potable and final wastewater. Implement and maintain the Lock-Out Tag-Out procedure; coordinate the safe release of plant equipment for maintenance activities. Handle inert and explosive gas (H2, N2, O2, acetylene, CO2). Maintain plant and site security. Provide training to personnel with respect to operation of plant equipment and encourage furthering of power engineering certification. Utilize site CMMS system as it applies to your role. Develop an awareness of major vendor documentation systems and operate equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions. Perform or assist others in performing maintenance operations on site as required. Assist the site team with engineering studies and upgrades required to optimize plant efficiency in your areas of expertise. Help identify areas to apply new technologies that will enhance plant operation by conserving fuel and reducing maintenance down time. Assist or seek assistance from other groups within NPI by developing a network of support. Develop and implement plant performance monitoring systems to identify areas for improvement in reliability, plant efficiency and long-term costs utilizing electronic technologies. Collaborate with all personnel to encourage innovations wherever possible. Assist with the development and implementation of environmental and health and safety policies and participate in teams managing these important areas. Complete other duties as assigned by management. Qualifications and Experience Holder of a valid 2nd class power engineer’s license in the province of Saskatchewan. Consideration may be given to a 3rd Class Power Engineer with 3 papers completed towards their 2nd Class certificate.
