This is skilled manual water maintenance and construction work. The incumbent assists in the supervision and participates in the construction and maintenance work of the water system. This will include laying out work, assisting in the supervision and the work of several subordinates engaged in water construction, maintenance, and repair tasks such as installing water mains as per design; installing service connections ; and utilizing shoring as required. This position will utilize a variety of equipment and repair processes such as an M-Scope to locate utilities; air compressors; cathodic protection; operates a laser level and other small equipment related to the construction and maintenance of the water system as required. Guides equipment operators involved in lowering materials into trenches or trenching work for underground operations; gives appropriate hand signals and assists in the safe operation of the equipment by watching for overhead wires and other obstructions; and workers or the public. May respond to water calls and complaints and may supervise one or more semi-skilled or unskilled assistants engaged in the work. Drives a work truck and performs related work as required.
Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 and sound experience in water construction and maintenance tasks or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Considerable knowledge of related methods, practices, tools and equipment used in water system construction, repair and maintenance tasks. Sound knowledge of the applicable hazards and safety precautions and standards. Ability to lay out work and assist in the supervision of several subordinates performing skilled and semi-skilled water system construction and maintenance tasks; to stay current with advances in maintenance, repair and construction techniques; to understand and carry out oral and written instructions which may be accompanied by sketches and/or plans; and to drive a work truck safely. Sufficient physical strength, stamina and coordination to permit performance of heavy manual work outdoors in all weather conditions. Class 5 Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia and EOCP Water Distribution Level 1 Certification (Water positions) are required.
