The Detectors Group at TRIUMF plays a crucial role in the field of particle and nuclear physics. They specialize in designing, developing, manufacturing, and assembling detector systems for both local and global projects. Currently, we are seeking a highly skilled Journeyperson Machinist to join our team. A CNC Machinist at TRIUMF provides specialized research and development machining services, working independently to create precise parts for research projects while meeting tight tolerances. The role also involves offering technical support, troubleshooting, as well as assembling parts and components for various research programs. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Leads research & development effort for new machining technologies, and establishing relevant SOPs and best practices Programs & operates CNC lathe and CNC vertical machining centers Machines exotic materials such as ceramics, composites, and engineering plastics, in addition to conventional metals Provides consultations to users regarding manufacturability, fabrication methodologies, and other relevant technical knowledge pertaining to design feasibilities Provides technical support for detector assembly, which may include hands-on work such as aligning and gluing scintillators, wrapping light guides, and more Liaises with other machinists and external shops, as well as contractors and suppliers, to meet project requirements and procure necessary supplies Maintains a respectful, clean, and safe environment in the shop SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Does not have ongoing supervisory responsibilities, but is expected to provide guidance, training, and mentorship to other Group members; may also be called upon to coordinate external contractors and other TRIUMF technicians. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Demonstrated expertise in both programming and operating CNC lathe and vertical mill centers.Experience with 4 & 5 axis work a plus Extensive experience with developing solutions (e.g. fixtures designs) to meet unusual or challenging manufacturing requirements General expertise with all shop equipment such as bandsaw, belt-sander, drill press, etc. Attention to details and able to work with tight tolerances, including QC work Good hands-on skill and expertise with handling and assembling delicate components Experience with machining/grinding ceramics and/or application of PCD tools is an asset Experience with ultrasonic machining, automation systems such as pallet loading, and/or Siemens 8400 control system is a significant plus Experience working in an R&D environment is a boost Strong competency with CAM programs, preferably MasterCAM and Autodesk Fusion Working proficiency with 3D CAD programs, preferably SolidWorks Demonstrated critical thinking and troubleshooting skills Eagerness to learn and develop new techniques Good interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills General software skills such as Words, Excel, or equivalent Competency to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment Ability to write clear and concise technical documents and keep detailed records Ability to balance priorities and work with changing requirements Coaching and mentoring experience are beneficial MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: Minimum qualification includes a Red Seal Endorsement with 7+ years of post-certification experience in programming and operating CNC machines. Candidates must also have demonstrated competency in CAM software, strong communication and critical thinking skills, and a willingness to learn and develop new techniques and methodologies. Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada on a permanent basis (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident). SALARY: Annual salary would be $82,535.00 CAD plus our comprehensive benefits plan.
