PURPOSE OF THE JOB The Head of Excess Casualty will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for the Excess Casualty division within ICW Specialty. This role is accountable for driving underwriting profitability, sustainable growth, and disciplined portfolio management across the entire excess casualty segment. The executive will lead the development and execution of underwriting strategies, oversee product innovation, cultivate top underwriting talent, and ensure the alignment of the division’s objectives with the broader goals of ICW Specialty. This leadership role requires a deep understanding of the Excess & Surplus and Excess Casualty marketplace, disciplined underwriting judgment, and the ability to build and manage profitable portfolios in a dynamic, broker-driven environment. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical underwriting skills, market credibility, and a passion for developing underwriting talent. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Strategic Leadership & Vision Develop and oversee underwriting execution and risk selection across the excess casualty portfolio, including lead, mid-layer, and high-excess placements. Establish underwriting guidelines, reinsurance treaties, risk appetite, and compliance standards across the business unit. Develop and execute a multi-year strategy for the excess casualty division in alignment with the company’s specialty growth objectives. Identify market trends, emerging risks, and competitive gaps to inform product design, pricing, and positioning. Serve as a thought leader and executive sponsor for casualty innovation, including litigation trend monitoring, social inflation modeling, and use of advanced analytics. Underwriting & Portfolio Management Monitor underwriting performance, pricing adequacy, and attachment point strategies to ensure profitability and risk-adjusted returns. Collaborate with actuarial and finance teams to assess rate need, loss trends, and class-of-business strategies. Oversee all aspects of underwriting, including risk selection, attachment strategy, coverage terms, and pricing discipline. Lead quarterly portfolio reviews, segmentation strategies, limit deployment tactics, and loss ratio management. Drive technical underwriting excellence through development of playbooks, guidelines, and authority structures. Partner with actuarial, claims, and reinsurance teams to refine models and ensure alignment between exposure and capital deployment. Distribution & Market Engagement Develop differentiated broker engagement strategies to enhance distribution relationships nationwide with the ultimate goal of building long term partnerships that foster profitable growth of the excess casualty business. Serve as the face of the Excess Casualty business at industry conferences, panels, and strategic broker summits. People Leadership Build and develop a high-performing underwriting team, with a focus on coaching, mentoring, and succession planning. Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and inclusion, ensuring employee engagement and professional development. Establish and monitor individual and team performance metrics tied to profitability, growth, and operational excellence. Governance, Compliance & Risk Control Ensure underwriting practices are aligned with internal business unit appetite and ICW Governance Enterprise Risk Management frameworks. Proactively address aggregations, systemic risk exposures, and risk accumulations, particularly across shared casualty layers. Support internal and external audits, model validations, and control effectiveness reviews. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 15+ years of commercial casualty underwriting experience, with at least 10 years in excess casualty leadership. Bachelor’s degree required. CPCU, ARM, or similar designation preferred. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS Proven track record of building and managing a profitable portfolio Strong communication and people management skills. Deep knowledge of litigation trends, nuclear verdict drivers, and industry-wide social inflation impacts. Demonstrated ability to manage multi-regional teams and broker distribution networks. Strong analytical mindset with familiarity in actuarial metrics, exposure modeling, and portfolio optimization. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Office environment – no specific or unusual physical or environmental demands and employees are regularly required to sit, walk, stand, talk, and hear. The position frequently requires employees to reach with hands and arms. This position requires more than 80% computer use. WORK ENVIRONMENT This position operates in an office environment and requires the frequent use of a computer, telephone, copier, and other standard office equipment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The current range for this position is $210,000.00 - $682,500.00 This range is exclusive of fringe benefits and potential bonuses. If hired at ICW Group, your final base salary compensation will be determined by factors unique to each candidate, including experience, education and the location of the role and considers employees performing substantially similar work.
