Job Description: POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY: The Custodian maintains the cleanliness of the facility, property and/or grounds in compliance with applicable standards. The incumbent makes minor repairs and provides access to the facility as required. ACCOUNTABILITIES: Job Duties • Ensures the general upkeep of the facility such as cleaning floors, washrooms, windows, dusting, collects and disposes of garbage, vacuums • Checks, cleans, moves, arranges and dusts furniture as required • Ensures the general upkeep of external property such as mowing lawns, keeping sidewalks clear of snow and ice, cleaning main floor outside windows, picking up litter, sweeping sidewalks, gardening/watering and pruning shrubs, raking • Checks doors and windows to ensure building and resident security; provides access to the facility and secures the facility as needed • Restocks washroom supplies and distributes received material as required • Spot washes accessible walls, strips and waxes floors and shampoos carpets as required • Establishes and monitors preventative maintenance procedures for related equipment; recommends repairs and purchases as required • Performs a number of minor repairs and duties in a variety of trade areas such as electrical, carpentry, plumbing and painting; reports safety concerns and major repair issues (e.g. furniture and fixtures) • Organizes own work with some flexibility to choose alternative sequence of tasks based on the current circumstances • Performs other duties as assigned Written and Verbal Communication • Occasional communication of a routine nature • Normal composure, courtesy, and tact are required Some problem solving within the scope of work with a choice of action within limits. CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT • Communicate with guests/clients of shelter, transitional and supportive housing • Communicate with other staff and volunteers in the building Governance Boards and Councils: None Internal: • Fort St. John/ Northern Centre of Hope staff members and volunteers External: • Residents, clients, and guest. MANAGERIAL/TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITY: • Reports directly to: Supervisor • Direct reports for this position: N/A FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT: • May be authorized to spend, disburse, or collect small amounts of cash WORKING CONDITIONS: • Typical working location for this position is in the entire facility and property designated • The performance of the job requires industrial cleaning equipment and tools, mopping/sweeping, bending/twisting/lifting, occasional ladder work and fine motor skills • The incumbent is required to lift more than 20 pounds and applying over 40 lbs force • The performance of the job requires moderate to high attention when using motorized equipment, handling hazardous chemicals, using non-motorized/general cleaning supplies, adhering to safety procedures and regulations and occasionally ordering supplies • Works under the following disagreeable conditions: o Handle garbage o Isolation and monotony o Odors o Dealing with angry people o Exposure to drugs and alcohol o Verbal abuse o Exposure to toxic chemicals o Various weather conditions o Washrooms (i.e. human waste) o Multi-tasking • May have little to no travel required • May be exposed to the risk of moderate to severe injury or illnesses due to: o Physical attacks by others o Exposure to infectious diseases o Exposure to toxic chemicals o Moving objects o Sharp objects (e.g. needle pricking) o Electrical Hazards o Injury from lifting o Falling on wet/slippery floors o Repetitive strain injuries (e.g. back, wrist). EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Qualifications and Certifications: • Have some High School education • WHMIS training • An alternative level of education and experience may be considered Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements • More than three months but less than one year of prior related experience, including life skills and general familiarity with cleaning and maintenance procedures. Skills and Capabilities: • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills. • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility. SCHEDULE: Saturday - Sunday (8 AM - 2:30 PM) Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide: • Background check consent. • A clear vulnerable sector screening. • A clean drivers abstract. • Completion of our online Praesidium Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training. The salary range is based on Collective Agreement, not any other factors. Compensation: The target hiring range for this position is $23.28 to $23.66 with a maximum of $24.03. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
