Job Description: Position Purpose summary: Performs routine and preventative maintenance and repair procedures on all mechanical equipment and utility systems at the Ministry Unit under the supervision of the Managing Director/Supervisor. This is a temporary position for a 3-month period. Accountabilities: Job Duties Implements preventative maintenance procedures for related equipment, recommends and performs minor and some moderate repairs (program vehicles, faucet, toilets and light fixtures); Undertakes minor renovation projects including dry walling, minor electrical repairs, plumbing; carpentry, and painting; reports safety concerns and major repair issues Conducts minor troubleshooting of building systems; Assists in developing specifications for tenders and in monitoring quality of workmanship of outside contractors and/or maintenance personnel; Ensures supplies are received, stored, and redistributed to the appropriate departments; Establishes and monitors preventative maintenance procedures for related equipment; recommends repairs and purchases as required; Maintains a personal log book. Record all tasks undertaken during shift; Contacts contractors for service as outlined in pre-established documents; Understand, communicate and ensure that all employees’ health and safety is of 1st priority by means of safety huddles, safety notifications, supervisory communication, and utilization of regulations and company policies policy and procedures. Oversee equipment and repair parts data entry and management. Ensures the general upkeep of the facility including all scheduled maintenance weekly, monthly, yearly…etc. Ensures the general upkeep of external property such as mowing lawns, keeping sidewalks clear of snow and ice, cleaning main floor windows outside, picking up litter, sweeping sidewalks, gardening/watering and pruning shrubs, raking Monitors security and reports breaches Communicates regularly with Managing Director and if needed The Occupational Health and Safety Committee in-house. Performs other duties as assigned Written and Verbal Communication Written logbook will be maintained, completes maintenance forms, requests quotes from outside contractors, Liaises with outside agencies for facility inspections CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT Communicate with guests/clients of shelter, transitional and supportive housing Communicate with other staff and volunteers in the building Governance Boards and Councils: None Internal: Fort St. John/ Northern Centre of Hope staff members and volunteers External: Contractors and Inspectors MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY: Reports directly to: Supervisor Direct reports for this position: N/A FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT: May be authorized to spend small amounts of cash WORKING CONDITIONS: Typical working location for this position is in the entire facility and property designated, inside and outside Job requires moderate to high attention when using motorized equipment, handling hazardous chemicals and using non-motorized/general cleaning or maintenance equipment The performance of the job requires operating equipment and tools, lifting/twisting/carrying/moving, ladder work and find motor skills Lifting and carrying objects weighing from 20 to 29 pounds Occasionally may need to lift and carry between 40-50 pounds Works under the following disagreeable conditions: Machinery noise Confined spaces Varying temperatures Dealing with angry people Exposure to drugs and alcohol Verbal abuse Work schedule affecting lifestyle Isolation Various weather conditions (e.g. heat, cold, rain or snow) Exposure to toxic chemicals Multi-tasking May be exposed to the risk of moderate to severe injury or illnesses due to: Physical attacks by others Exposure to infectious diseases Exposure to toxic chemicals Exposure to bodily fluids Sharp objects Electrical Hazards (electrical shock) Risk of back injuries Risk of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Risk of cuts, puncture wounds Other dangerous situations The above responsibilities must be performed in keeping with The Salvation Army’s Mission, Vision and Values, in a professional manner, upholding our code of conduct. education and experience Qualifications: Education, Qualifications and Certifications: Will have completed High School WHMIS training Valid BC drivers license Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements One year but less than two years of prior related experience, including custodial, and general repairs (i.e., electrical and plumbing experience) Skills and Capabilities: Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills. Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved oral or written instructions Ability to relate to officials, staff and public in a courteous manner Ability to acquire job skills with three months of on-the-job training Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening. Compensation: The target hiring range for this position is $23.95 to $24.33 with a maximum of $24.70. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
