Join our Fleet Services team and play a vital role in maintaining the City's diverse fleet of heavy equipment. As a Journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic, you'll be responsible for performing inspections, preventive maintenance, major and light repairs, modifications and overhauls to vehicles and equipment. You'll have the opportunity to utilize your expertise by accurately diagnosing, examining, testing, repairing and rebuilding vehicles and components. Apprentices will receive specialized training and support from our Technical Trainers and Journeyperson mentors to achieve the expertise required to keep our fleet moving now and into the future with evolving fuel technologies.

What will you do?
Perform inspections, preventative maintenance, minor and heavy duty repair and overhaul work on all components, including engines, electrical controls and systems, power train, brakes, steering, suspension, transmissions, fueling and other systems
Follow approved methods and techniques as set out in the manufacturer's manual and shop instructions
Work within the standard job times for routine work
Perform basic and complex diagnosis of systems through the use of diagnostic scanning tools, computer software and traditional methods
Lubricate vehicles and/or ensure lubrication is carried out as required
Perform Commercial Vehicle Inspections (CVIP), and required Police inspections
Complete major repair authorization forms, provincial certifications, PM inspection sheets, and other required documentation
Contribute to ongoing workflow processes by entering data and information into a computerized fleet management system to record job times, work performed and maintenance history
Assist in the training of apprentices and junior staff
Adhere to established Safe Work Practices, Standard Operating Procedures, and OH&S and Environmental standards and procedures
Perform other related duties as required
High School Diploma
Certified Alberta Journeyperson in the trade of Heavy Duty Mechanic/Technician, Interprovincial Red Seal preferred
Some Heavy Duty Mechanic/Technician experience with (and knowledge of) electrical systems and controls, air brakes and engines.
Assets:
AssetWorks M5 experience
Valid Class 1 driving license
Skills required for success:
Complete knowledge of trade and related equipment and ability to apply it in locating, diagnosing and repairing vehicle and equipment malfunctions
Capable of competently using vehicle diagnostic computer programs
Ability to learn on the job and adapt to a changing work environment
Strong problem solving and interpersonal skills
Able to understand, communicate, read and write English at a level needed to meet job-related task and safety requirements
Demonstrated good work ethic and a willingness/ability to learn and mentor on the job and update skills
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and OH&S safety precautions applicable to the trade

Conditions of Employment:
Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel toed boots, safety glasses and high-visibly clothing is a requirement for this position
Capable of passing a job-related physical abilities (FARE test) evaluation (includes lifting 75 pounds) and a City medical examination
Possession of a valid Alberta Class 3 Motor Vehicle Operator's Licence including Air Brake Endorsement. A valid Class 1 driving license is considered an asset.
Maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
Ability to obtain and maintain a Provincial Highway Inspection Certificate (CVIP)
Work Environment:
This role requires the ability to work in various environments, including exposure to dust, fumes, noise, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and various weather conditions
Working in a variety of positions for an extended period of time, as well as the ability to work at various heights, is required

Up to 7 permanent full-time positions and 1 temporary full-time for up to 11 months position available
Hours of Work: 40 hours per week. Ability to work a variety of shifts on a 24/7 shift cycle, must be available to work nights and weekends.
Salary Range:
Apprentice: $37.643 - $42.347 Hourly; $78,598.580 - $88,420.540 Annually
Journeyperson: $47.053 (Hourly); $ 98,246.660 (Annually)
Salary ranges are in the process of being updated in accordance with the recently ratified collective agreement between the City and CUPE local 30 and will be forthcoming shortly.
