ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
This role reports to Director, Applied Genomics Centre
SUMMARY
The Molecular Geneticist will play a significant scientific leadership role in research projects within the Applied Genomics Centre (AGC). They will contribute to project design and development, experimental design, perform laboratory tasks, and communicate results to the industry partners and AGC leadership. This individual will work closely with industry partners, the AGC Research and Partners Manager, and the AGC Director. They will also help supervise and train student researchers working in the AGC laboratories, or in the field as applicable.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide research leadership under the direction of the AGC’s Director:
Work with industry partners and the AGC senior leadership to conceptualize applied research projects with significant molecular genetics components.
Gather, organize, and maintain experimental data and records in the AGC lab, and in the field when required.
Execute experiments required for research projects, including quality control, and troubleshooting when necessary.
Assist in preparing reports and presentations, collaboratively and under the direction of the AGC’s senior leadership.
Provide on-site supervision and training to undergraduate student researchers and junior research staff, when required.
Generate and update standard operating procedures for routine and new developments, in collaboration with the Laboratory and
Research Coordinator and/or senior research staff.
Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of MSc in genetics or related discipline, PhD preferred.
Experience in genomics techniques including, but not limited to, qPCR, Sanger Sequencing, Illumina Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) and/or Illumina SNP arrays.
Experience in NGS data analysis is an asset.
Experience in R software, or similar software, for genetic and statistical analysis.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Excellent planning and organization skills.
Teaching experience, as well as coding languages for large dataset bioinformatics (eg. Python) are a major asset.
