Hours of Work 40 hours per week Department Transit Location This position is currently based out of Burlington Transit, 3332 Harvester Road. However, the work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands. Position Overview Burlington Transit is looking for motivated individuals to join our team of highly skilled, professional Transit Operators. Successful applicants will be required to drive conventional and specialized transit vehicles and be exposed to a variety of working conditions and people on a daily basis. Responsibilities The Transit Operator is responsible for: Operating a transit bus on schedule on a designated route(s) in varying weather conditions. Customer service, including answering or referring customer inquiries, collecting fares, providing directions, providing guidance to persons with disabilities for boarding and de-boarding, as well as securing them. Performing proper inspection of vehicle and reporting of deficiencies, accidents or other occurrences in accordance with systems regulations. Ensuring passenger safety at all times. Following policies, established safety procedures and standards. Advising Transit Supervisor/Dispatcher when off schedule, vehicle maintenance issues, and for vehicle or passenger emergencies. Requirements Applicants must have a CZ or BZ license, a Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, and exceptional customer service and communication skills. Transit Operators require good judgment and safe driving habits, demonstrated by a clean driving record, with zero demerit points. The license must be held in good standing and not have been suspended or revoked under the Highway Traffic Act or Criminal Code in the last three years. This will be verified if an offer of employment is made. Previous commercial driving experience is preferred, and previous Transit experience is beneficial. Applicants must have a good working knowledge of the City of Burlington streets and boundaries and the Transit routes. Applicants must be proficient in verbal and written English communication skills. Applicants must meet the physical requirements of the job which are repetitive and constant. They include but are not limited to prolonged periods of time, sitting, reaching, gripping, pushing/pulling of steering wheel, twisting and turning neck, sensory/perceptual demands, along with good concentration. Regularly exposed to moderate noise. Transit Operators will be required to work a variety of shifts including splits shifts and day, afternoon, and evening shifts. Police Check Requirement Those who are made an offer of employment will be required to provide proof of a clean criminal record check, including a vulnerable sector search, at their own expense. Hourly Rate The rate of pay for this position is $31.29 (90% of job rate) per hour for the first twelve (12) months, then $33.03 (95% of job rate) from 13-24 months, after which the hourly rate will be $34.75.
