Job Description: Position Purpose summary: The Thrift Store Supervisor is responsible for the daily operation of the Kemptville Thrift Store ensuring store sales targets are met by implementing stated standards in sales, customer service, merchandising, store staff training, reclamation, product donation flow, and the processing of in store donations Accountabilities: Provide direct supervision to the operation of the Thrift Store and work and communicate with the Business Manager to ensure that sales targets are met, and expenses controlled. Foster a work climate that inspires enthusiasm, mutual trust, respect, professionalism & teamwork to achieve goals. Motivate, train & develop employees to maximize their potential and performance and to meet and exceed store sales targets. Ensure store layout plans are achieved including merchandise displays, in-store promotions and keeps abreast of marketing trends by checking competitors’ stock. Ensure stock is rotated regularly and merchandise is organized and displayed to maximize sales. Ensure consistent and quality sorting and pricing of donations; assist where needed in the sorting room and store, receiving, etc. Maintain and oversee safety standards and the general maintenance for an attractive and organized store. Tidy up and restock shelves, clean, sweep, dust, and mop as necessary; on a rotational basis clean the lunchroom, washroom, and other common areas. Maintain custody of cash drawer and safety of store assets. Follow cash handling procedures and standards to record, balance, and deposit daily sales. Report and document any variances in cash. Ensure daily finance reports are submitted to the Business Manager or designate, weekly and other reports are completed in a timely and accurate manner. Order retail supplies and maintain appropriate supply levels; large orders - additions to inventory, or property maintenance to be coordinated with the Business Manager. Supervisory May participate in the hiring, orientating, training, evaluating, recognizing, and performance management in consultation with the Business Manager Supervise, coach and mentor staff and volunteers with professional maturity. Provide ongoing training for new hires, and yearly required updates. Cross-train store employees and volunteers to do various jobs within the thrift store. Respect and comply with all Salvation Army policies and procedures, ensuring that employees are aware of, and comply with, policies. Lead and/or participate in morning meetings assigning tasks for the day, informing employees of achievements, goals met, etc. Plan monthly work schedule for the employees and volunteers, ensuring adequate manning and allowing for vacations, which are pre-arranged and approved then submitted to the Business Manager for documentation. Maintain volunteer statistical records for Salvation Army Management Information System and submits required statistics monthly basis in consultation with the Business Manager. Communication Communicate any maintenance issues to the Business Manager in a timely manner. Conducts regular staff meetings and participates in regular ministry unit management meetings and provide up-to-date reports on store business activities, etc. Communicate with the Business Manager to ensure consistent adherence to Ministry Unit Store Policies/Promotions and for support as needed. Customer Service Set an example in customer service for employees, welcoming and responding to customers in a courteous and helpful manner. Ensure customer concerns are addressed in a timely and professional manner and know when to escalate concerns to the Business Manager Create a non-judgmental and supportive environment for Salvation Army clients and customers. Health, Safety and Security Monitor staff safety practices in compliance with health and safety standards, policies, and procedures, and prepare, submit, and act on incident reports (WSIB); providing calming intervention as required ensuring the safety of everyone. Ensure and maintain a safe working environment for employees and customers both inside and outside of the store, (e.g., snow removal, clear fire exits, no obstacles inside/outside store, cleans spillage and maintains store cleanliness dealing with volatile situations). Report any workplace incidents on a timely basis. Secure store premises daily. Ensure donations and garbage left outside store premises are picked up in a timely manner. Ensure that loss prevention processes and policies are consistently implemented. Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures. Perform other position related duties as required. MANAGERIAL/TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITY: This position reports directly to the Business Manager Responsible for providing direction and checking results for 7 Thrift Store employees, and active volunteers. FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT: Assist with the materials management of donations/product flow in the thrift store. Oversee the cash and debit sales, ensure that bank deposits balance and are deposited nightly as per store and TSA policy; the float is secured for the next day. WORKING CONDITIONS: This is a permanent full-time role at 35 hours per week. This job requires the ability to stand for long periods with frequent twisting, bending, crouching, and reaching; the ability to lift/move between 20 to 29 pounds is required. The incumbent may be exposed to moving objects and angry people. The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures in addition to health and safety rules and regulations such as universal precautions, i.e., wearing PPE and working with unknown contents. QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: Completion of Post-secondary College Certificate Program in Business/Marketing/Retail Management or equivalent. EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE: Have a minimum of two (2) year of prior related experience, including retail, marketing, and supervisory experience. Cash handling experience is required. Experience with cash registers and related processes and procedures i.e., bank deposits, summary reports, etc. Basic math skills are required to calculate discounts and percentages. Product brand awareness would be an asset. Experience working in a computerized environment. Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered. SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES: Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills. Self-motivated/disciplined. Must have strong skills and experience using word processing (WORD); spread sheet use (EXCEL); specific programs related to The Salvation Army. Ability to develop and maintain a team environment; work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness. Attentive listening skills for the purpose of supervision, coaching, and conflict resolution. Excellent interpersonal, motivational, supervisory, organizational and customer service skills. Have strong oral/written communication skills. Lead by example, by demonstrating a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and be flexible in the face of change. Ability to maintain information in confidence and exercise good judgement. Demonstrated ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment. Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening. Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, own vehicle, and insurance; may be required. Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities. Compensation: The target hiring range for this position is $39,739.02 to $49,673.78 with a maximum of $59,608.54.
