JOB SUMMARY
The Avalanche Forecaster is responsible for managing the daily operational avalanche safety program at Grouse Mountain. This includes daily avalanche forecasting, weather analysis, and control operations in accordance with the Grouse Patrol Avalanche Safety Plan. The role combines technical forecasting abilities with active fieldwork and patrolling duties, including responding to incidents, maintaining snow safety infrastructure, and supporting the safety of staff and guests across the resort. This role plays a central part in promoting a culture of safety, supporting the training and supervision of avalanche control personnel, and ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and standards.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Avalanche Program Responsibilities:
Daily Weather Observations, Weather Forecasts, Info Ex entries and avalanche forecasts
Overseeing the Grouse Patrol Avalanche Control Program (Blasting and Ski Cutting)
Monitor and implement regulatory changes in all aspects of the avalanche control program
Oversee the Grouse Patrol Avalanche Safety Training Program
Liaison between Grouse Mountain and the Canadian Avalanche Association
Responsible for annual review of the Grouse Patrol Avalanche Safety Plan and Grouse Mountain Code Alpha Procedure
Responsible in conjunction with the Safety Advisor and Patrol Manager for maintaining up to date training records for all workers working in avalanche terrain (Avalanche Control Sign Off)
Patrolling and Field Operations
Patrol Snowshoe Park and other avalanche terrain to monitor signage, barriers and safety systems
Assist with morning set-up and evening sweep of terrain, including first aid response as needed
Tour terrain regularly to assess and mitigate avalanche and other mountain hazards
Support other departments in identifying and managing winter weather risks
Training and Supervision
Assist in training patrol staff in avalanche forecasting, control, and rescue procedures
Maintain accurate training and competency records for staff working in avalanche terrain
The Avalanche Forecaster is responsible for overseeing the Avalanche Technicians
Support safety drills and seasonal training exercises
Administrative and Program Management
Maintain the Grouse Patrol Avalanche Safety Plan and related SOPs
Coordinate with the AST Instructors Schedules & Organize the AST Program
Monitor regulatory changes and ensure program compliance with CAA and WorkSafe BC standards
Ensure inventory and inspection of avalanche control and rescue gear in conjunction with the Patrol Manager
Participate in planning and execution of public education events such as Avalanche Awareness Days
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND ABILITIES
Minimum Requirements
80-hour+ First Aid Certification (e.g., OFA-A, EMR, NUEC-A, OEC, PCP)
CAA Avalanche Operations Level 2
WorkSafe BC Avalanche Blasting Certificate (or equivalent)
Expert ski touring ability with personal touring equipment
Strong avalanche risk assessment and snow science knowledge
Physically capable of ski touring 10+ km in varied terrain and weather
Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills
Preferred Qualifications
CAA Registered Professional Member or progress toward CAA Level 3
CAA AvSAR Level 2
Experience with snow safety programs, rope rescue operations, and public avalanche education
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position is based in an alpine environment with exposure to cold, snow, wind, and variable conditions. Avalanche Forecasters must be physically fit and comfortable working outdoors for extended periods. The role requires flexibility, including early morning starts, weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
$25.37 to $29.67/hour
