Your Opportunity:
Our many libraries have become a vibrant hub where students, faculty and researchers meet to interact with librarians and expert staff, use collections and collaborate. Thousands of people visit Robarts Library on a busy day. Working in the Library and under the supervision of the Manager - Security, Health & Safety, the uniformed building patrol is responsible for, but not limited to, maintaining a safe and secure environment in the library community.
Typical Duties:
The following tasks are illustrative of the skills required and the extent of responsibility involved in this job. They in no way limit the incumbent to the tasks indicated.
- Timely opening/closing of assigned libraries for staff and patrons. This will include, but not be limited to, lighting, elevators, escalators, interior and exterior doors.
- Provides access control coverage at library entrances.
- Carries out instructions, investigation, recommendation with written reports at the end of each shift, relating to:
a) library's safety, health, fire protection, personal safety and security
b) unauthorized persons, trespassers or loiterers
c) unsafe conditions in the libraries
d) deficient building maintenance
- Provides first aid services to staff and patrons
- Provides personal safety and security to library staff and patrons.
- Enforces applicable library and university policies and procedures.
- Provides general information and directional assistance to patrons.
- Promptly responds to portable radio calls, fire alarms and security alarms, and proficiently acts.
- Patrols the library, as required, and liaises with the staff in the patrolled areas.
- Reports to and receives directives from the Duty Library Supervisor.
- Participates in library programs relating to health and safety, personal safety, security, fire prevention and general building maintenance.
- Promotes good personal safety and security practices to library staff and patrons.
- Attends meetings and all mandatory training.
- Uses appropriate forms, logbooks and email when writing required reports.
- Wears designated uniform, carries security guard license and maintains professionalism while on duty.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
Education:
- Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. Courses in Police Foundations an asset. First Aid training required.
Experience:
- At least one year of related experience is preferred. Previous experience in a position of trust. Customer service experience an asset.
Other:
- Must possess and maintain a valid Security Guard Licence issued by the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.
- Must possess and maintain Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification through a recognized provider.
- Must maintain a clean criminal record.
- Effective oral and written English communication skills
- Demonstrated good work performance and attendance record, and must be punctual.
- Must be tactful and conscientiously aware of good public relation protocols.
- Must demonstrate ability to communicate effectively with library patrons and other employees. Must be confident and effective in working alone, responsible, mature and decisive.

Rate of Pay - $20/hour
