Job Description COOK .50 FTE – Extendicare-Red River Place Candidates are invited to apply for the position of Cook to work at Extendicare-Red River Place, a (104 bed) long-term care facility, located in Selkirk, Manitoba. Reporting to the Food Service Manager, follows established policies, procedures and standards, prepares and serves food for the residents, including the more complex meal preparation for the facility (dinner, sauces, desserts etc.), cleans production area and equipment. What you’ll be doing Following the Regular and Therapeutic menu plan for diet and texture requirements. Preparing entrees for breakfast, lunch and dinner and preparing items for nourishments according to standards set by Extendicare, Manitoba Health and Canada’s Food Guide. Preparing food items for distribution to dining areas while ensuring temperature and quality control. Daily menu is posted as required. Provide assistance and guidance to others as required - directs dietary aides in basic food preparation/service standards. Ensure that food is of correct quality and standard upon delivery and in storage. Maintain a clean and organized work area and ensure staff is compliant with proper food safe procedures. Check twice daily and document all food holding, fridge, and freezer temperatures. Maintain all records in accordance with policies, procedures and legislative requirements. Control cost by minimizing spoilage, waste and exercising portion control. Adheres to established departmental policies, procedures regarding quality assurance, fire, safety, environment, infection control, and Personal Health Information. Participates in facility meetings as assigned. Attends education in-services and completes all education requirements that are required online. Other duties assigned by the Food Service Manager. What you bring Previous Food Service experience in an institutional setting, preferably in a long term care setting. Current and successful completion and/or enrollment in Food Handler Training Certification course within 6 months of hire is required. Must be able to read, write, and speak English. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to read and follow standardized recipes and production sheets is required. Basic understanding of Therapeutic Diets is preferred. Solid understanding of quantity cooking methods, procedures and portion control is required. Excellent organizational, time management and multi-tasking skills is required. Ability to take direction from Manager and perform tasks in cooperation with other staff members – team work is required. Must be mature, patient, courteous, and understanding when working with the elderly or disabled. Must be service oriented. Good physical and mental health. Ability to stand for extended periods. Ability to lift a maximum of 23 kilograms. Must adhere to the Extendicare – Dietary Services Hair Restraint and Dress Code policies. Proven ability to provide direction and lead others within a busy environment.
