Job Description:
The Surveillance Assistant (SA) role is an integral part of the Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) Program. The SA is primarily responsible for conducting hand hygiene and environmental audits as well as providing clerical and administrative support as needed. Under the direction of IPAC leadership and in collaboration with the Infection Control professionals (ICPs), the SA is also involved in the development, implementation, and evaluation of educational initiatives to promote infection prevention and control practices across THP.
The SA will further contribute to performance improvement projects within the IPAC department and assist with other tasks within the department as assigned.
Responsibilities:
Hand Hygiene and Environmental Auditing / Education
Conduct hand hygiene audit observations and compliance assessments throughout the hospital.
Provide direct on the spot feedback to healthcare workers
Assess barriers to effective hand hygiene practice by engaging staff in the hand hygiene process through questions, discussions and interactive demonstrations
Identify staff learning needs (knowledge gap analysis)
Provide formal and informal hand hygiene education sessions to small and large groups
Assist in hand hygiene promotional activities
Maintain and input data collected into database
Conduct routine and scheduled environmental audits and monitoring in all assigned inpatient and outpatient care areas following specifications developed by the ICP in compliance with policies and procedures
Assist in other Infection Prevention and Control initiatives, audits or evaluation projects that pertain to achieving department goals
Admin / Clerical
Provide administrative support
Prepare and update pertinent IPAC information including microbiology and patient admission reports
Clerical duties include, but are not limited to, delivery of mail, ordering/maintaining inventory supplies for team, answering incoming phone calls and routing to appropriate team member, scheduling meetings, scribing, preparing and formatting reports and documents
Qualifications:
Diploma / Degree in health-related discipline preferred
Experience working with an infection prevention and control program in a hospital setting preferred
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary team environment
Self-directed, well-organized and detail-oriented
Strong written/verbal communication skills
Proficient in coaching, mentoring and delivering adult education
Proficient in the use of computer databases, spreadsheets and literature search, familiarity with EPIC HIS is an asset
