The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) supports faculty and course instructors in their professional development as teachers, and provides consultations, resources and technology support to enhance learningin their courses and programs. CTL also enhances academic skill development both within and beyond courses through our English Language Development Support, Facilitated Study Groups, Mathematics and Statistics Learning Support, Experiential Learning, and Writing Support programs.

Your opportunity:
As the Educational Technology Technician, your primary role is to administer and support faculty, staff, and students with educational technology tools like Quercus (U of T’s learning management system), support online assessment delivery, lecture capture, web content management systems such as Drupal, various user authorization/identity management systems (e.g. UTORid), and other in-house web-based applications and other digital learning platforms. You will ensure that educational technology systems are functioning properly and troubleshoot as needed. In this role, you will demonstrate adaptability to changing technologies and a willingness to learn and use new tools.
The Educational Technology Technician will manage urgent tasks and resolve issues swiftly during busy periods. You will respond quickly and effectively during peak times and time-sensitive projects, demonstrating strong problem-solving skills and the ability to maintain focus and efficiency in fast-paced situations. You will keep well-informed on current technologies (including Generative Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality), best practices and industry standards. You will analyze complex statistical reports and information for program planning and improvements to CTL client services.
You will participate as a tester and/or trainer in development and implementation projects (including AODA compliance) and contribute to team-based initiatives and activities. Where appropriate, you may also take responsibility for specific projects or components, demonstrating initiative and collaboration.
This role will work closely with other members of the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL), including Educational Technology Specialists and Educational Developers, to support teaching innovation. You will regularly collaborate with UTSC's Information and Instructional Technologies Support (IITS) team, handling application-related queries received through ServiceNow, our ticketing system and ITSM tool.
You will also work collaboratively with academic departments, and campus partners (e.g., the Registrar’s Office and AccessAbility Services).
Additionally, you will liaise with the Academic, Research & Collaborative (ARC) Technologies team and the Teaching, Learning & Technology team within the Centre for Teaching Support and Innovation (CTSI) to address routine inquiries and escalate questions or concerns as needed.
You will create and coordinate instructional and training materials to support software use, drawing on your instructional design background to develop effective resources that help adult learners understand and apply technology. You will also organize and deliver accessible application training programs and produce clear, user-friendly documentation.
In addition to developing training materials, you will deliver training sessions and workshops or assist with coordinating these events.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Probing for information from end-users to identify problems, thoroughly investigating and analyzing technical issues, and establish needs (relating to the use of educational technology to support teaching and learning)
- Conducting needs assessments to determine end-user technical requirements (e.g. determining if Faculty member's exam should be loaded using an assignment or quiz tool)
- Configuring web applications according to objectives or user feedback (e.g. Configuring tools in the U of T Academic Toolbox such as Zoom and MS Teams, according to users needs or objectives)
- Providing detailed information to instructors on how to build a course shell (in Quercus, anon-line teaching and learning tool)
- Researching, analyzing and recommending potential changes to system features (as part of a managed review process)
- Assessing and determining best practices and standards formultiple instructional modalities (would determine technical best practices)
- Facilitating educational workshops and seminars
- Serving as a resource to a group or on a function (e.g. assisting Faculty on how to use software such as Examsoft or Quercus or Zoom)
Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in computer science, business or education or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum three years' experience in application support, specifically with Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Content Management Systems (CMS), as well as with basic website development (HTML, CSS) and general computer software support
- Experience with instructional design, in order to create effective and clear training materials and presentations
- Experience delivering effective training sessions and workshops using audio-visual communication and presentation technology
- Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing technologies and learn the use of new tools and systems
- Ability to solve complex technical and logistical problems and demonstrate natural empathy, patience and the willingness to take responsibility for finding a solution to a problem
- Excellent communication (both oral and written), interpersonal and listening skills
- Ability to exercise tact and discretion regarding confidential materials and matters
- Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills, as well as the ability to work well under pressure, meet strict deadlines and deal with a high volume of client and vendor demands
- Ability to work well as a team member in a multi-professional environment working with a wide range of faculty, staff and students
- Ability to learn quickly from reference manuals and on-line help facilities and keep technical skills up-to-date
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to act on one’s own initiative with minimal supervision
- Ability to conduct research on various elements related to technology support work
- Proficient in using Microsoft Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint, as well as Adobe Acrobat and software development tools for graphical diagramming (e.g. Visio, MS Whiteboard)
