The Role
BGC is looking for a Legal Consultant to join our Contracts and Legal Team on a temporary basis, reporting to Corporate Affairs. As a Legal Consultant, you will support our Risk Manager and In-house Counsel, and this role may also support project teams on dispute resolution processes. While this is a temporary 8-10 month maternity leave replacement, there is potential for the role to transition to permanent. The ideal candidate is an experienced paralegal who is looking to grow their career or a lawyer who is interested working as an in-house counsel.
The role will be working in a fast-paced, dynamic office environment alongside our engineering, geoscience and functional teams. You will gain valuable industry experience working at a multinational Engineering and Geoscience firm. This position can be located at one of the following BGC Canadian offices: Vancouver or Calgary.
It is expected that you will be in the office initially 4 days a week and with time this could decrease to 3 days per week.
Responsibilities
Work with in-house counsel, corporate affairs, public relations, accounting and human resources on a range of internal legal, regulatory, and project-related support
Negotiate contracts with clients, suppliers and business partners
Analyze and escalate potential risks involved with specific project issues, regulatory, and court processes
Explain terms and conditions to relevant parties
Track engagements where BGC is retained under client-solicitor privilege
Research legal, regulatory, and commercial matters for review by in-house counsel and CFO
Support project managers and contract admin in doing conflict of interest checks
Required Education, Experience & Competencies
5-8 years’ experience with legal related work experience
Knowledge of legal issues across a range of contracts in a range of jurisdictions
Strong analytical skills and a critical mindset for making recommendations
Ability to work well under pressure, work efficiently to meet strict deadlines and pivot with changing priorities
Attention to detail with ability to spot errors and discrepancies
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Ability to work with all levels within the organization, including employees, leads, as well internal and external partners
Proficient in Adobe Acrobat, DocuSign and MS Office with the ability to learn new technology and software
Desired Education, Experience & Competencies
Bachelor's degree in law (a foreign law degree will also be considered) or a Licenced Paralegal designation.
Experience in the mining, energy, construction or insurance industries
Prior experience working with human resources, public relations and/or accounting teams
Experience negotiating with suppliers, clients, etc.
Experience delegating work to external legal counsel
A solid understanding of contracts and contracting processes
A solid understanding of basic physics, construction and business practices

The estimated base salary range for this position is: for a paralegal, $60,000-$100,000 CAD per annum; for an in-house legal counsel, $120,000 to $160,000 CAD per annum for someone called to the bar in a Canadian province. However, base pay will be commensurate with job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Base salary is pro-rated for the term of employment to an hourly rate. BGC's compensation package also includes a training allowance and a comprehensive medical and dental plan.
