The tenure for this position is three (3) years, with a potential for a one (1) year extension as per the Career Path Guidelines.
Job Description
Working as part of a creative production team that is responsible for all public-facing communications from the Department, the Social Media Officer and Spokesperson will primarily be responsible for engaging the public through VicPD's robust social media presence, acting as a spokesperson for on-camera and on-air interviews, and as the face of VicPD in public safety campaigns.
Responding to media queries and topics of interest, the Social Media Officer and Spokesperson will research answers, drawing from policy, subject matter experts and other sources to synthesize information into an easily understandable format. The position may require attendance at ongoing police scenes, management of the media on-scene, and crafting or delivering emergency messaging.
The Social Media Officer and Spokesperson will also proactively identify news stories through a community-first lens, ensure their accuracy, liaise with internal partners and external stakeholders, and analyze potential impacts through an investigative lens.
The Public Affairs section is a creative environment that creates and executes numerous projects and campaigns per month. The Social Media Officer and Spokesperson will have a lead role in managing projects and working with other staff to ensure the best results in a timely manner.
The Social Media Officer and Spokesperson will also plan and/or assist with public events and community engagement campaigns or events, and is the emcee for swearing-in and other Department events.
Report to the Director, Community Engagement Division
Working 40 hour per week, weekdays.
Some requirement to work OT to support command posts or community activities
This position requires flexibility in working hours and the ability to respond to call-out situations
Required Qualifications:
Must be personable and articulate
Demonstrated public speaking abilities
Excellent writing skills
Willingness to be on-camera and on-air
Ability to maintain composure in the face of media or public questioning, or during times of heightened public anxiety or crisis
Preferred Qualifications:
Exceptional time-management skills
A healthy knowledge of social media and the channels that VicPD currently uses
Excellent attention to detail in written word and imagery
Demonstrated ability to convert policing terms into conversational English
Able to build and foster trusting relationships with internal and external partners
Highly organized
Can work as part of a team or take a leadership role depending on project
