Position Summary
Reporting to the Manager, Learner Accessibility and Conduct, the Academic Aide, Student Services, provides essential support to students with disabilities.
This position’s key functions include:
Acting as a reader, scribe, or note taker for assigned learners who experience difficulties producing written materials in class
Assisting with taking clear and accurate notes from lectures and presentations
Supporting students in understanding instructions
Transcribing dictated answers for exams.
Providing non-tutoring support services during or after class to complete assignments,
Preparing alternate format materials for use with assistive technology, and assembling materials to support academic projects.
Establishes appropriate responses to learner-initiated interactions and demonstrates good judgement in knowing when to escalate/refer learners to other resources.
Promotes an atmosphere of respect for adult learners which is central to this role.
Acting as an Invigilator for Accommodated Testing
Invigilates computer and paper-based exams
Ensures test security and integrity through monitoring
Supports students with logging onto password-protected sites
Collects completed tests and returns to appropriate College personnel
Deals appropriately with difficult situations and people (i.e if there are concerns with exam integrity)
Providing Alternative Format/Material Preparation Support
Prepares alternative format materials for us with assistive technology
Assists learners by preparing and assembling materials to complete academic projects
Checks formatted materials for quality and accuracy
Ensures materials are formatted and distributed in a timely fashion
Other duties as assigned
Occasional weekend and evening work may be required,
Required qualifications:
Diploma (post-secondary) in a related field
Minimum of two years of related work experience
An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered.

Preferred qualifications
Training or experience working with persons with disabilities
Knowledge of disability-related barriers faced by adult learners
Strong organizational skills and initiative,
Experience with adaptive technology.
Proficiency with Microsoft Word and the ability to use current technologies required by learners is an asset.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, particularly in working with adult learners, are essential.
