The City of Burnaby is actively recruiting for a dynamic and ambitious
individual for this regular full time Building Code Engineer role in our Plan
Checking organizational unit. This opportunity consists of professional,
administrative, and regulatory work involving the review of complex building
plans and specifications submitted for permits. The incumbent acts as a
technical resource to the Fire and Building Departments in the areas of building
regulation with emphasis on Part 3 of the BC Building Code. The Building Code
Engineer assists in plan review and inspection of Certified Professional
Projects, the coordination of complex project permitting; participation in the
demonstration of the coordinated fire and life safety systems required for
building occupancy; administration and participation in the evaluation of
Building Code Alternate Solutions. Additionally, assists in the development of
bulletins and brochures to outline departmental policies and procedures, permit
and inspection requirements and code interpretations. On major projects
coordinates the permitting activities and acts as the departmental contact for
developers, contractors, professionals and city departments. The incumbent will
support the District Building Inspector in the demonstration of the coordinated
fire and life safety systems required for occupancy and administer Alternate
Solution applications by distributing, coordinating and tracking submissions,
providing technical evaluations, assembling/reconciling departmental comments,
and corresponding with applicants. You will perform related work as required.
Qualifications include university graduation with a specialization in
Engineering or Architecture supplemented by courses in mechanical and fire
protection systems plus considerable related experience; or an equivalent
combination of training and experience. Eligibility for membership with the
Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C. (APEGBC) or the
Architectural Institute of B.C. (AIBC). Certified Professional from APEGBC and
AIBC and/or completion of the Certified Professional course and experience
working as a Certified Professional is preferred. Certification as a Registered
Building Official by the Building Officials’ Association of B.C. (BOABC) is
preferred. As the Building Code Engineer, you will have considerable knowledge
of the B.C. Building and Fire Codes and the National Fire Protection Association
(NFPA) Standards. Furthermore, you will have the ability to enforce codes,
regulations and bylaws with tact, firmness and sound judgement, perform
research tasks; analyze technical data; prepare comprehensive technical reports
and recommendations related to the work; establish and maintain liaison and to
deal effectively with a wide variety of internal and external contacts in
matters related to the work and to represent the Department in various meetings
and internal and external committees. Communicating effectively orally and in
writing is essential for this position. A Driver’s Licence for the Province of
British Columbia is required.
