Duties:
Leading and managing a team of instrumentation engineers and technicians
Defining department objectives, setting work priorities, and managing workflow to meet program requirements
Fostering a culture of safety, technical excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement
Managing departmental budgets, procurements, tooling, and scheduling
Representing the FTI department in cross-functional meetings, client briefings, and project reviews
Coordinating with test pilots, flight test engineers (FTEs), aircraft maintenance, and systems engineering to define instrumentation needs
Overseeing the planning, designing, and integration of custom and standard instrumentation systems for rotary and fixed-wing aircraft
Ensuring all data acquisition systems, sensors, transducers, recorders, telemetry systems, and onboard electronics meet program specifications
Leading the development and integration of FTI systems including wiring, sensor selection, data buses, and software interfaces
Ensuring accurate calibration, validation, and functional testing of all instrumentation prior to flight
Maintaining robust documentation, including wiring diagrams, interface control documents (ICDs), configuration control, and system design reports
Ensuring compliance with national and international aviation standards, including EASA, FAA, TCCA, and military equivalents where applicable
Collaborating with the Safety Management System (SMS) team to maintain hazard assessments and risk mitigation strategies related to instrumentation activities
Ensuring that work adheres to ITPS’s quality assurance policies, flight safety protocols, and airworthiness requirements
Recruiting, training, mentoring, and developing staff within the FTI department
Conducting regular performance evaluations and recommending career development paths
Promoting cross-training and knowledge sharing within the team to build technical resilience
Interfacing with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that instrumentation deliverables meet contractual and technical expectations
Supporting proposal development, technical quotations, and customer demonstrations as needed
Participating in reviews, including Preliminary Design Reviews (PDRs), Critical Design Reviews (CDRs), and Test Readiness Reviews (TRRs)
Keeping current with new instrumentation technologies, data acquisition systems, telemetry and processing tools
Driving innovation in the department by evaluating emerging technologies and incorporating them into future system designs
Providing regular departmental reports to senior leadership on project status, risks, staffing, and budget utilization
Maintaining comprehensive project documentation to ensure auditability and traceability of all instrumentation work
Requirements:
Completion of a two- to three-year college program in avionics or electronics is required
8+ years of experience in flight test instrumentation, with at least 3 years in a leadership role
Four years of on-the-job or company apprenticeship training is required
Proficient in data acquisition systems (e.g., IADS, DEWEsoft), signal conditioning, telemetry, and MIL-STD/ARINC interfaces
Strong leadership, project management, and interpersonal skills
Familiarity with civil and/or military airworthiness certification standards
Hands-on experience with calibration, sensor integration, and signal troubleshooting
Occasional travel may be required to support remote flight test campaigns, vendor site visits, or client meetings
