Job Title: Technician 1
Reports to: Laboratory Manager/Laboratory Supervisor
Department: Inorganics
Location: Burnaby, B.C.
6 months Contract
Basic Purpose:
• Responsible for performing sample preparations and to provide general lab support in the analysis of samples in accordance with the requirements of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Health and Safety policies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Health and Safety Policies when conducting all activities
Review LIMS summary reports to plan and prioritize daily work to accommodate due dates and hold times
Prepare reagents, calibration standards, and samples prior to analysis
Operate basic analytical instrumentation such as Uv-Vis Spectrophotometer, turbidimeter, pH/ISE meter, following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure accuracy and quality of work
Calculate final results and enter data into LIMS
Carry out calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of instruments
Work under the guidance of Analysts/Coordinators
Provide updates on status including advance notification of any delays
Carry out quality control procedures and recognize when data is unacceptable using Control Charts
Identify any non-routine samples and seek guidance on procedures for handling
Meet quality and TAT specifications required by the client and ensure samples are analyzed within hold time requirements
Identify and immediately communicate procedural non-conformances and deviations to Supervisor
Employ proper laboratory techniques to minimize risk of mislabeling, sample mix-up and cross contamination between samples and other materials
Retrieve and archive client samples for storage and disposal
Participate in developing SOP’s and Work Instructions
Participate, when requested, in Health and Safety meetings and internal/external audits
Maintain training records and relevant qualifications
Keep work area clean, neat, and organized
Adhere to Bureau Veritas Code of Ethics Policy.

Skills and Competencies:
Diploma in Chemistry or equivalent. Preference given to those with laboratory experience.
Positive outlook with an ability to work in a fast paced environment.
Good time-management, communication, multi-tasking and priority setting skills.
Adaptable and flexible to a changing environment.
Work well both independently and as part of a team.
Detail orientated & have good record keeping skills.
Ability to accurately follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and instructions.
Ability to learn quickly.
Physical and Environmental Conditions :
High level of production work in fast paced lab environment.
May require flexible workings hours, overtime, and shift work.
May involve long periods of standing.
Hazardous materials are handled using established safety procedures and appropriate PPE.
Some lifting and carrying (up to 20lbs).

The salary range for this role is $19.5 – $21.00 an hour.
Pay within this range varies by work location and may also depend on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and market location.
