Role Overview The Manager, Creative Content Unit, is a leadership role responsible for driving the strategic direction and operational excellence of creative content production and acquisition within the CBC News Division for the Atlantic region. Reporting directly to the Managing Editor, this role is central to advancing our mission of being story-centred, growing our audience, enhancing community connections and fostering an engaged and agile staff. You will play a crucial role in shaping our digital presence, amplifying diverse regional voices and ensuring our content resonates with target demographics, particularly the 30-49 age group. You will lead efforts to optimize content delivery across digital platforms and develop creators in diverse communities. Along with the Senior Producer of Creative Content who reports to you, you will source and evaluate documentary and short form content, make program planning recommendations and oversee the integration of acquired content to complement our original productions. Key Responsibilities Subject matter expert in rights negotiations and contract management for producing and acquiring content for broadcast on multiple CBC platforms. Review budget requirements and production reporting, negotiate with independent production financing and in-house production executives. Participate in program planning meetings, film festivals and stakeholder events, representing CBC as required on juries and panels. Have extensive knowledge of screen industry news and trends, Canadian talent and issues in culture, broadcasting and current affairs. Manage requests for acquisitions investment/contribution and usage rights for programming streams ensuring strategic fit and alignment with programming needs. Coordinate the management, tracking and distribution of project pitches and submissions for the department. Manage and maintain the database of all creative and business materials for the department. Plans, assigns and manages the work of a team of 8 or more within scope on a day-to-day basis to resolve operational problems. Selects, trains and evaluates staff. May be responsible for discipline, compensation recommendations, leave management etc in consultation with senior management. May be required to address confidential industrial relations matters. Cultivate an engaged, productive and agile staff by implementing structured communication, content review processes and feedback mechanisms. Actively promote continuous learning and career advancement for team members. Optimize team capacity and workflow efficiency by strategically addressing workload issues, allocating resources and roles effectively. Qualifications Needed Education: Post-secondary degree or equivalent experience in Communications, Journalism, Film/Television Production, Digital Media, or a related field. Experience: Minimum 3 years of progressive leadership experience in content production, media management, or a related creative field. Direct experience in content evaluation, rights assessment and acquisition processes Experience with budget implementation and resource allocation in a content production context. Familiarity with collective agreements and HR practices is an asset. Skills & Competencies: Solid understanding of the legal framework and rights language related to broadcast and acquisitions contracts; clear understanding of complexity of rights within a broader market context. Knowledge of CBC business parameters and practices including CRTC guidelines and broadcast licenses; familiarity with funding issues such as tax credits, etc. across Canada. Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, with a proactive and agile approach. Deep content evaluation abilities and a drive to source content reflecting underrepresented groups. Strong cultural sensitivity and a commitment to contributing to an inclusive and equitable culture. Ability to function collaboratively and effectively across several departments in a multi-functional capacity. Exceptional leadership and team-building skills with the ability to inspire and motivate creative professionals. Proven ability to translate objectives into yearly actionable plans and measurable outcomes. Excellent communication (written and verbal), interpersonal, and presentation skills.
