The Opportunity
Reporting to the Director of Logistics & Transportation, the Transportation Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all transportation services and activities at the Calgary Food Bank. This role plays a key part in continuously improving operations by implementing new systems and processes to ensure we secure the highest volume of the best quality food at the lowest total cost. Additionally, the Transportation Supervisor is a leader within the organization, ensuring an efficient, safety focused, client-centric, community-engaged, supportive and performance-driven environment.
What You’ll Do
Leadership & Team Management
- Directly supervise a team of 12 drivers, a dispatcher, and a transportation assistant, fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and excellence.
- Provide coaching, training, and performance feedback to ensure professional growth and consistent adherence to standards.
- Schedule and allocate resources effectively to meet daily operational needs.
- Participate in the hiring, training, and development of staff
- Identify and implement technology-driven solutions to enhance routing, scheduling, maintenance, donation logging, and record-keeping
- Manage performance-related issues and collaborate with leadership for support when required
- Manage the preventative maintenance program for all fleet assets
- Approve timecards for staff on a bi-weekly basis
- Conduct annual performance appraisals for transportation staff
Operational Oversight
- Ensure the timely and efficient collection and delivery of food across all routes, maintaining reliability and client-centered service.
- Monitor fleet operations, vehicle safety, and compliance with all legal and organizational requirements.
- Partner with Warehouse and Client Services teams to align logistics with broader Food Bank priorities.
Innovation & Systems Development
- Identify and implement innovative solutions to improve transportation efficiency, safety, and sustainability.
- Lead the development and adoption of new systems and technologies (e.g., route optimization, telematics, scheduling software).
- Develop and maintain SOPs that reflect best practices in nonprofit logistics and transportation.
Performance & Accountability
- Establish, monitor, and report on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the transportation team, including delivery timeliness, fuel efficiency, safety incidents, and service quality.
- Drive continuous improvement through data analysis, problem-solving, and stakeholder feedback.
- Ensure transparent accountability for all team members, addressing issues proactively and fairly.
Strategic Contribution
- Contribute to the long-term transportation strategy in alignment with the Calgary Food Bank’s growth and expansion plans.
- Build partnerships with external vendors, service providers, and community partners to strengthen transportation capacity.
- Anticipate future needs and proactively recommend solutions for scaling operations.

- Provide leadership, training, and encouragement to staff and volunteers.
What You Bring
- Post-secondary education in a related field (Business, Supply Chain, Logistics, etc.).
- Supply Chain credential, (i.e. SCMP) is preferred.
- 2+ years of experience in logistics, transportation and dispatching roles.
- 5+ years of supervisory experience, preferably in transportation or driver management preferred.
Skills & Capabilities
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to set priorities and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in computer systems, including MS Office, transport & routing management systems.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage a diverse workforce.
- In-depth knowledge of transportation laws and regulations.
Working Conditions
This is an office-based role with regular visits to the co-located warehouse(s) and branches. This is a regular full-time position working 37.5 hours per week. Hours worked beyond the regular work week must be pre-approved will be earned and taken as lieu time.
