Position Summary
Bow Valley College is seeking a Program Chair to join the School of Health and Wellness. Reporting to the Associate Dean, the Program Chair provides academic and operational leadership to assigned programs, supporting faculty, staff, and learners in alignment with the College’s strategic plan. This role is responsible for ensuring the highest standards of academic quality, program integrity, and learner success while fostering a collaborative and innovative educational environment.
The Program Chair plays a key role in program leadership by promoting a positive, team-oriented culture that supports open communication, mentorship, and collaboration across departments. The position provides consultation and guidance to faculty, assists with recruitment and orientation of new instructors, and ensures that faculty are well-supported in their teaching and professional development. The Chair coordinates regular program meetings, facilitates communication between internal and external stakeholders, and actively contributes to the achievement of departmental and institutional goals.
In collaboration with the Associate Dean, the Program Chair oversees program maintenance, development, and evaluation. This includes addressing curriculum issues, implementing updates and feedback, and ensuring programs meet accreditation and review requirements. The Chair promotes instructional excellence, develops program schedules and timetables, and supports the integration of best practices in teaching and learning. Additionally, the role contributes to academic planning initiatives and participates in program reviews, accreditation processes, and other quality assurance activities.
A key responsibility of the Program Chair is fostering a positive learning environment that supports learner success. The Chair engages directly with students through orientation sessions, advising, and guidance, addressing academic or personal challenges in collaboration with faculty and college services. The role upholds academic integrity, promotes learner recognition and awards, and encourages student engagement through activities and professional development opportunities.
The Program Chair also ensures that curriculum remains current and responsive to industry and sector trends. By collaborating with faculty, curriculum designers, and subject matter experts, the Chair supports the design of relevant, outcomes-based learning experiences and contributes to continuous improvement in course and program delivery. The position may also participate in developing transfer credit pathways and inter-professional education opportunities to enhance learner mobility and employability.
Externally, the Program Chair represents the School and College to professional associations, government agencies, and community partners, promoting the College’s programs and reputation. The role involves building strong relationships with stakeholders, supporting program marketing initiatives, and identifying opportunities for collaboration and growth.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree
Minimum of five years of experience in a post-secondary environment, including teaching and preferably academic program leadership.
Experience with applied research considered an asset.
An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree.
Demonstrated commitment to learner-centred and outcomes-based education.
Strong knowledge of program content, curriculum development, and learner success strategies.
Experience in recruitment, retention, and conflict resolution.
Collaborative, innovative, and transparent leadership style.
Excellent organizational, communication, and time management skills.
Proven ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and interdisciplinary teams.
Proficiency in computer applications and learning management systems.
