Job Description The Analyst, Investment Accounting, will be a key contributor of BWS’s growing team and will report to our Director, Investment Accounting. The role is based in Brookfield’s Toronto offices at Brookfield Place. The role provides support across a broad range of traditional and alternative investment products including Corporate and Government Bonds, Private Loans, LPs, and Third-Party Funds in a variety of investment structures. The Analyst will work closely with internal teams responsible for Investment Operations, Portfolio Management, Financial Reporting, and Risk Management, and will often interact with various external parties such as BWS’s SaaS system providers, auditors, and others to ensure BWS’s investments are accounted for in accordance with relevant GAAP and US-Insurance statutory accounting principles. This will involve routine exercises as well as project-based initiatives aimed at developing and applying accounting policies, supporting deal flow, and ultimately delivering complete and accurate financial information for downstream users. Responsibilities: Monitoring new trades and validating security master file (SMF) data and transaction details. Reviewing initial set-up for book yields, and monitoring on an ongoing basis. Understanding US GAAP and Statutory treatment described in policy memos, and helping to ensure they are recorded accurately. Routine reconciliations, including investment payables and receivables balances, unapplied cash suspense and various P&L accounts; and other routine exercises to support month-end closing, such as accounting header elections, account hierarchy checks, pricing consistency, asset classification consistency, etc. Quarterly financial reporting exercises such as preparation of financial packages, income reasonability checks, reviews of externally provided cashflows, supporting the application of FAS 91 and FAS 157 analysis, etc. Participating in securities’ ratings workflow to support compliance with insurance regulatory requirements Supporting the development and maintenance of effective internal controls, and corresponding processes such as SOX key controls documentation and process walkthroughs Supporting audit and ad-hoc requests as needed, and other special duties and projects as assigned Qualifications & Requirements: Above-average proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Power Query, Power BI, VBA) and other tools such as SQL to transform and analyze very large data sets Experience with US GAAP and Statutory accounting Minimum 2-3 years of experience in Finance (accounting, treasury, corporate finance, capital markets) Judgement, critical thinking and analytical skills combined with attention to detail and thoroughness Organizational skills to effectively manage priorities, multi-task where necessary to meet timelines Demonstrated ability to own and improve processes Self-motivated and proactive with the ability to operate independently Strong communication and collaborative skills, written and oral Interpersonal skills and ability to develop collaborative relationships at all levels in the organization Team-oriented with a commitment to shared success above personal accomplishment or recognition Degree in finance, accounting or related business discipline Completed CPA, CFA or related designation, or working towards qualification Insurance sector experience and knowledge of insurance reporting requirements is an asset High degree of professional ethics and integrity Brookfield is committed to maintaining a Positive Work Environment that is safe and respectful; our shared success depends on it.
