Job Description
Recreationist contributes to recreation planning and conducts recreation activities with groups at the Day Centre. The Recreationist also organizes and promotes both research and evidence-based programs while taking into account the needs and interests of the clients.
We are looking for: A Full-Time Recreationist (1 Year Contract)
Hours of Work: 34 hours/week. Mon - Thurs 8:30AM - 4:30PM, Fri - 8:30AM - 3:30PM. This role is based at our Adult Day Program in Maple.
Reports to: Supervisor, Adult Day Program
Responsibilities
Recreation Facilities
Ensures that Day Centre facilities are operated and maintained effectively and safely
Assists in the preparation and development of the monthly calendars/letters
Ensures policies and regulations are adhered to
Monitors the use of recreation equipment and facilities
Works effectively with all staff at the Day Centre to ensure the safety and well-being of the clients
Recreation Programs Development
Develop, implement and evaluate agency initiatives and programs that support employee health and well-being, including the development and delivery of surveys, communication materials and employee education.
Ensure regular review of the annual Wellness at Work Strategy and Action Plan, and agency programs and policies related to employee health and well-being.
Oversee the management of the agency’s existing health and wellness programs, including developing regular communications to promote the programs to employees.
Oversee the agency’s group benefit plans for each employee group, including eligibility, promoting the group benefit plan, and day-to-day benefits administration.
Liaise with external partners to coordinate wellness activities for all employees.
Manage the agency’s involvement in Excellence Canada’s Healthy Workplace Standard accreditation program, including liaising with Excellence Canada contacts, recommending next steps to agency Senior Leadership to progress along the Standard, and completing the evidence submission.
Recommend improvements for wellness program/initiative based on employee feedback.
Inventory Control and Related Duties
Responsible for overseeing the purchase, planning, design, construction and upkeep of recreation facilities and areas
Explains principles, techniques and safety procedures to participants in recreational activities and demonstrates use of materials and equipment
Team Building and Leadership
· Actively participates in team initiatives and meetings
· Builds support for agency vision and departmental goals/objectives by communicating, collaborating and leading by example
· Builds rapport with team members to ensure a high performing team
· Looks for daily opportunities to highlight the connection between overall strategy and day-today activities
· Acts as a change agent to positively encourage others and manage change
Risk, Health and Safety Management
Identifying and reporting health and safety incidents and concerns in a timely manner to the appropriate supervisors and/or funders, documenting incidents in EasyCare and escalating appropriately to the designated supervisors as outlined in the Client Safety Reporting policy (C.01.38).
Participating in health and safety processes and procedures
Participating in maintaining a safe workplace environment by cultivating a positive safety culture and encouraging best practices to promote both staff and client safety and well-being
Participating in all health and safety training initiatives on a regular basis.
Taking proactive action against client incidents within your scope of practice.
Developing a plan to identify, manage and/or minimize client safety risks or situations in adherence with risk management operations policies
Assessing the severity of an adverse client safety/risk event and determining the best follow-up and developing an action plan following the event. Collaborating with funder (ex. HCCSS) and following any additional processes as required.
Calling emergency services (911) when the client is at an immediate risk of harming themselves or others, or if there is a serious injury and/or imminent harm.
Evaluating any potential hazards and identifying clients at risk for adverse health and safety events, taking preventative measures when necessary to minimize reoccurrence.
Reporting all safety events impacting clients, caregivers and families in a timely and honest disclosure.
Qualifications
Demonstrates sound work ethics and dedication
A degree in Recreation Therapy or completion of two (2) years community college in Recreation Therapy
Professional member in good standing with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO)
Basic Cardiac Life Support Certified
U-First training an asset
Experience working with frail and impaired elderly and their families
Experience working with seniors who have Alzheimer’s disease and dementia
Experience in presenting and collaborating with Senior Executives to support the growth of the Healthy Workplace culture.
Proven capability in identifying problems and contributing to value added solutions to achieve business objectives.
Strong attention to detail, sound judgment, organization skills, presentation skills and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced work environment.
Exceptional customer services skillset and mindset.
Team player with strong written and verbal communication skills.
