Reporting to the Associate Dean, the Experiential Learning Technologist (Cardiovascular Technology) (ELT) position supports the Cardiovascular Technology program with in-class experiential learning through assisting with lab software and supporting lab spaces, and with securing and managing field placements.
Field Placement responsibilities include: building relationships, advising, mediating, mentoring, guiding, developing essential employability skills, fostering professionalism and self-empowerment, coaching, referral, active problem solving, presentation and knowledge transfer, developing and coordinating agency outreach strategies, negotiating, initiating and implementing alternative placement plans, managing records, documenting, analyzing and reporting.
The incumbent works with faculty to organize the overall field placement process, field placement interviews, agency expectations, and student essential employability skills, and can serve as the principal point of contact for students, preceptors, and agencies. The ELT is responsible for sourcing and communicating accurate program standards through the development and maintenance of manuals, forms, and testing materials, as well as online resources, and agency and student meetings.
Under the direction of the management and faculty teams, the ELT is responsible for sourcing, assessing, and procuring placement opportunities for students. The ELT must establish and maintain relationships with community stakeholders that ensure the continuance of existing field placement opportunities and elicit new field placement opportunities.
The incumbent makes students aware of the Pre-placement requirements by developing and delivering field placement preparation courses, in-class workshops, assignments, case studies and collaborates with program staff to determine placement eligibility. The ELT works with faculty to continuously oversees students on placement to promote their success in placement and the acquisition of vocational and essential employability skills.
Experiential learning support duties include: support software, assist in developing lab and software scenarios and simulations, maintaining software and equipment, tracking and storing inventory, maintaining clean and safe lab spaces.
The incumbent will work with faculty to maintain a variety of software, including but not limited to Northeast Holter Monitoring, Norav, and GE PACs, to augment student learning relative to the program of studies and developing graduate knowledge skills and abilities. The position will work with faculty and other technologists in building and supporting scenario-based training and simulation exercises appropriate to learning outcomes of the Cardiovascular Technology program.
The technologist will assist in maintaining the working order of inventory/equipment/software, and related course, lab, and student files. They will routinely monitor supplies and advise program /lab coordinator/lab operations officer if any orders are required and/or report any equipment that requires service, and then ensure inventory is stored appropriately and maintains count records.
Under the direction of faculty, the technologist will help to maintain the laboratory spaces and support labs. This support work includes disinfecting and cleaning the equipment and working area; ensuring the laboratory is well-stocked and resourced with sufficient supplies; assisting with sharps disposal; assisting and supervising students during lab exercises; and maintaining student records of performance.
What you’ll be doing:
Student Preparation and Development- Provide knowledge and expertise, direction and support to field placement students to promote student success and achievement of placement outcomes. To do this, the incumbent will:
Facilitate the overall field placement process. This includes providing knowledge, expertise, and insight regarding meaningful and available placement opportunities that will advance students towards the acquisition of vocational and essential employability skills to achieve goals and aspirations after graduation.
Communicate with support staff, managers, and faculty from the Allied Health department and Cardiovascular Technology program to oversee the field placement assignments for students. Communicate with students, on an individual basis, to establish placement preferences and explore out of region placement opportunities that align with program and student goals to meet the needs of out of area students.
Advise students on agency specific placement requirements and outcomes. Compile and review student and agency placement requests to assess and determine field placement suitability. Approve and notify students of their placement agency and monitor the security of their placement during interview process. When a student is unsuccessful in securing a placement opportunity, the incumbent will request feedback from agencies, analyze and review findings with the student and create and implement a course of action that will chart the student on a route to success.
Inform students on the College’s placement protocol, policies, and procedures. Report and track student’s completion of required pre-placement documentation.
Coach students in leveraging the connections they are making between placement opportunities, employability skills, program learning outcomes, institutional learning outcomes, program vocational outcomes, and ultimately future employment goals.
If requested by faculty or administration, present knowledge transfer by designing and delivering Field Placement Preparation course which includes formal presentations on the College and program placement policies and procedures. Advise on the utility of available resources and essential employability skills from initial placement steps through placement completion.
Design and facilitate simulations, case studies, role playing, and any other activities during placement courses where students are expected to demonstrate professional behaviours. Present information on professional correspondence, advise on recognition of learning opportunities, goal setting, and individual professional development. Create, design and maintain learning tools using a combination of mediums on subjects related to field placement policies and procedures, professionalism and employment standards (e.g., Human Rights Code and privacy legislation, AODA, WSIB, Bill 18, etc.).
Review and confirm accurate completion of placement documents and assignments, e.g., evaluation form, incident and/or accident reports, attendance form, placement logs, Placement Confirmation Forms, insurance forms and other program specific expectations.
Document, compile, and analyze data to support sound decision making regarding student progression.
Contribute to development, revision and updating of program clinical manuals and other placement documents while meeting expected timelines and deadlines. Post announcements, program documents/forms (Field Practice Manual, Evaluation Guide, Student Orientation and Policy Manual, Daily Log Sheets), staff contact information, external links and upcoming community/special events in the MyCanvas clinical course.
Collaborate with faculty in program areas to determine suitability of new placement opportunities based on needs and/or issues of the students. In collaboration with program faculty, determine readiness, placement eligibility, and progression based on the completion of placement related activities, placement performance, and tasks effecting placement requirements such as logs and goals. Consult with Associate Dean/ Program Manager to establish relevant guidelines.
Oversee students in field placement settings. Initiate and guide field placement visits both on campus and/or at the agency; monitor student’s progress; problem solve any placement agency and student issues. Apply fact finding techniques to coach students through self-reflection and self-evaluation. Collaborate with relevant parties, determine course of action with complex field placement issues, in conjunction with Associate Dean/Program Manager and Field Placement Coordinator.
Promote student retention by providing outreach, advising, coaching, and guiding towards the utility of available College and external supports and resources. Identify and effectively resolve with a high degree of analysis potential or developing issues or concerns by either the preceptor and/or student. Assess placement issues and direct to appropriate college supports.
Document and summarize student’s performance, determine the need for intervention and develop and implement student success agreements. Monitor student’s progression towards completion of placement hours/days, initiate alternative plan of action if student is not meeting requirements. Decide and institute changes to field placement experiences, e.g., sequence and duration. Identify potential student issues and implement strategies to guide students to success; take action to resolve student placement issues by meeting with student and creating a restorative plan for success. Use critical thinking and analysis to recommend, develop and implement contingent success agreements that are agreeable to all involved parties.
Maintain confidentiality of student information and documents (i.e. CAAP, Success Agreements, medical documentation, vulnerable sector police checks).
Respond to health and safety related concerns. In collaboration with the Occupational Health and Safety Office, facilitate health and safety process prior to commencement of placement, and/or in the case of a student incident or injury at their field placement. Coordinate the student's return to field placement in consultation with Occupational Health and Safety following an injury or illness at the placement.
External Community Partnership – Leverage an effective and meaningful working relationship between the College, placement students and community partners. To do this, the incumbent will:
Develop and maintain significant, productive relationships at all levels with clinical partners/placement agency which elicit future placement and employment opportunities for students. Engage the community as an ambassador of the College, demonstrating leadership, and exemplifying the College’s strategic priorities, promoting positive working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and community partners. Inform preceptors on placement requirements, policies, and procedures to ensure their agency can meet the established protocol. Ensure placement agencies can provide learning opportunities that are aligned with learning outcomes.
Engage and initiate strategic networking initiatives to cultivate and maintain a network of contacts in the wider community to enhance field placement opportunities. Create, promote and recommend opportunities outside of placement for students to engage placement agency, assist with on-campus simulated program interviews, and promote College wide initiatives to agencies.
Partner with local agencies and organizations to build awareness of the profession and to stay current with trends, training, and to provide opportunities to network.
Provide outreach and respond to crisis, provide direction as requested, collaborate with the placement agency to determine how students can better meet the needs of the agency while still meeting their learning goals. This includes instances of mental health / behaviour, health and safety issues, placement injuries, WSIB reporting.
Faculty and Institutional Engagement –Collaborate with faculty and contribute to overall Mohawk College engagement. To do this, the incumbent:
Research, source and inform trends/best practices concerning placement. Advise of relevant issues from faculty, agencies and students for program adoption of procedures and policies. Provide recommendations to academic staff on placement policies and procedures.
Assist in the development of administrative processes, document trails, other metric systems for purpose of capturing performance data, including agency and student satisfaction results, participation levels, and other placement employment success measures. Contribute to inter-departmental planning and strategy implementation in addressing systemic issues that impact placement. Collaborate with database administrator to build and expand database to manage placement efficiencies and processes, develop electronic forms, and share relevant placement information.
When needed, attend and contribute to promotion meetings, program and advisory committee meetings, program and departmental meetings, student conferences with Coordinator and program staff, Open House and meetings with community programs. Collaborate with Faculty and/or Coordinator in meetings to review students’ progress. Provide recommendation to Faculty based on performance in the field and documentation. Use data to generate reports and contribute during curriculum and program advisory and promotion meetings.
Investigate and initiate contact with community agencies regarding placement opportunities and inquiries. Advise on updated procedures in place for community partners, preceptors, and new agency requirements.
Contribute to the attainment of the college’s strategic priorities by leading and/or undertaking special projects approved by or assigned by the manager. Examples include: – job fairs, program-specific open house, International initiatives, Agency Expo and Trade Show.
Update community partner profiles and programs, gather and compile data to support sound decision making by the college and its partners in relation to placement trends/shifts.
Cardiovascular Technology Program Lab Operations Support
Setting up of lab environment in the CVT labs to ensure correct delivery of specific labs and simulations.
Works with faculty to determine potential issues with set-up and take-down of lab offerings, and troubleshoot conflicts.
Moving equipment between lab spaces as needed.
Problem solving when conflicts occur with space and configuration of specialized equipment.
Organizing and supervising sign-up sheets for practice lab opportunities.
Oversee remedial/additional student lab practice sessions in ECG, blood pressure, Holter, and other areas as required.
Point of contact for students requiring support or direction specific to equipment failure, malfunction, warnings.
Proactively recommend process improvements through analysis of current procedures; review business process and refine work flows to improve efficiency/effectiveness and maintain a high level of customer service to students, staff and faculty.
In collaboration with faculty and program staff members formalize a multi-year capital asset management plan (maintenance, renewal, replacement, etc.); improve purchasing processes for materials and equipment.
Serves as the program’s initial point of contact for faculty and student use of program-specific software tools. Works with IT department, faculty, and other support staff to ensure computer systems are functional, meet the needs of the course / program, and reflect current standards.
Lab Equipment and Software Support
Troubleshoots and arranges maintenance of CVT programs’ lab equipment.
Assists faculty and staff as needed with computer software solutions related to program course deliveries.
Purchasing Services.
Plan, implement and manage procedures to optimize inventory control via inventory system.
Identify shortages and act in a timely manner.
Define individual program usage and track them regularly.
Oversee daily operations and identify issues.
Suggest solutions for continuous improvements.
Build and maintain strong relationships with suppliers.
Work with faculty, Program Manager, and Lab Operations Officer to update asset inventory listing.
Work with Associate Dean of Allied Health, Program Manager, and faculty to purchase new equipment, track and update the expenditure planner to ensure staying within allocated budget.
Preparing, processing and updating as required, purchase requisitions, identifying the correct account and program information for the products/services to be charged as related to lab supplies and linen.
Verifying order accuracy and receipt of good and services, processing invoices for payment, in a timely manner.
Creating and maintaining an accurate and reliable record and retrieval system to track all purchases.
Liaising and troubleshooting with suppliers, faculty, staff, and administration for missing paperwork (packing slips, invoices, etc.), order discrepancies, unavailable products, backorders, cancellation of services, etc. Take corrective action and communicate any outcomes with relevant parties.
Administrative Support
In relation to lab requirements, assists the CVT faculty and Associate Dean Allied Health by providing administrative support, acting as first point of contact with lab concerns, receiving and responding to telephone, surface mail, e-mail and other external requests for information regarding the CVT labs.
Documenting student and staff concerns and issues relating to the labs requiring the Associate Dean’s attention and proactively assembling additional data to support the decision-making related to the issue(s) associated with the lab.
Data gathering, compilation, and organization for a variety of reports and new lab/simulation proposals.
Assisting in tracking lab related budgets.
Supports academic schedules for lab bookings within the CVT labs.
Generates correspondence related to the CVT labs to internal departments, external individuals and agencies as needed.
Assists with the facilitation of tours of the labs.
Maintain equipment and lab cleaning schedules and requirements.
Works with faculty to organize printed resources for assessments.
Communicates to partners to promote the value of partnerships and to execute specific projects.
Assists with statistical analyses of projects’ initiatives to evaluate outcomes and engagement; produce reports of specific and significant results for feedback to stakeholders, future planning and communications.
Other duties as assigned
The incumbent undertakes special projects or assignments as deemed appropriate at the request of the Associate Dean of the program.
What you’ll bring to the role:
A minimum of two-year post-secondary education in Cardiovascular Technology or similar CVT education.
Minimum of two (2) years experience using and supporting CVT-specific software. Experience using Northeast Holter-monitoring software and GE PACs strongly preferred.
Must be a registered member of the Canadian Society of Cardiology Technologists.
Minimum of three (3) years experience in a CVT setting working as a Cardiovascular Technologist or similar role.
Valid Ontario G Class Driver’s License.
Must be First Aid & CPR certified.
