Job SummaryThe Royal Columbian Hospital (RCH) in New Westminster British Columbia is a level 1 trauma center with 450 acute care beds and 12 OR’s. RCH is the primary acute care hospital within the Fraser Health region which services a population of 1.75 million people. RCH perform on average 970 open-heart cases per year. These are comprised of CABG’s, valve replacement/repairs, and complex aortic procedures. There are 13 perfusionists at RCH supporting all cardiac procedures including 170 IABP procedures, 435 cell savers and 20-30 ECLS cases per year. RCH is also the only 24/7 ECLS retrieval program in BC with custom built ECLS transport equipment designed for both ground and air transport. RCH is also a designated clinical training site for the BCIT perfusion technology program.

Detailed OverviewAs part of a multidisciplinary health care team, this position coordinates the delivery of effective clinical education, training and supervision of perfusion students within Fraser Health, and identifies and implements continuing education for clinical perfusion staff within the department.
Collaborates with the Cardiovascular Perfusion Program Lead Education Coordinator (BCIT) to ensure the quality of educational outcomes for students adheres to the requirements of the Perfusion Education Program (BCIT), and with the established policies, standards and guidelines of Fraser Health.
Responsible to coordinate continuing education related to Perfusion practice/techniques for healthcare professionals in acute departments within FH.
Maintains clinical competency as a perfusionist; provides perfusion services utilizing perfusion techniques and procedures.
Responsibilities - Coordinates the delivery of effective clinical instruction, education, training and supervision of perfusion students.
- Assigns perfusion students to trainers and clinical rotations in order to meet learning objectives. Coordinates and presents lectures as appropriate; identifies topics in accordance with curriculum guidelines, develops presentations, provides material and arranges for guest lecturers. Ensures appropriate and qualified student supervision; ensures clinical standards of the training program are maintained. Instructs students in technical procedures by demonstrating clinical perfusion techniques in operating rooms and/or simulator laboratory.
- Assists and mentors students to meet evaluation standards by providing counselling and guidance related to education and study skills. Provides students with regular evaluation updates; maintains student records including evaluations, progress reports, assessments, clinical competency tests and attendance information. Instructs and ensures students are familiar with department policies, procedures and standards of practice.
- Instructs clinical preceptors in all aspects of student evaluation, including student training initiatives and use/completion of clinical evaluation processes.
- Liaises with affiliate clinical education coordinator on student progress, development, absences, assessments and feedback to ensure training objectives are met. Liaises with designated staff to discuss instruction requirements/schedules to ensure proper exposure and experience to clinical activities in accordance with requirements of the Cardiovascular Perfusion Program.
- Provides continuing education support to department clinical staff through the development/delivery of education plans, including emergency management.
- Participates in the interdisciplinary development of patient-centered best practice protocols, procedures and guidelines (PPG) to align with Fraser Health's strategic plan, policies, standards and practices.
- Coordinates continuing education related to Perfusion practices/techniques for staff including nurses, respiratory therapists, physicians and other allied health professionals in departments such as Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU); Intensive Care Unit (ICU); Interventional Cardiology and Emergency.
- Develops, delivers and maintains new staff orientation program to ensure clinical competency.
- Collaborates with Perfusion Supervisor to create department performance and competency measures.
- Maintains clinical competency as a perfusionist and provides perfusion services during staffing fluctuations. Conducts perfusionist functions such as assembly and operation of extracorporeal equipment to support or temporarily replace patient circulatory and respiratory functions (i.e. heart-lung machines, intra-ortic balloon devices and precision blood pumps); performs myocardial perfusion and protection techniques; employs/utilizes a variety of techniques such as hypothermia, haemodilution and autotransfusion; assesses/monitors patient condition such as hemodynamic pressures, blood gases, electrocardiograph and blood flow; and administers blood products, drugs and gases as directed by Cardiac Anaesthetists and surgeons. Acts as perfusion resource in non-cardiac service areas.
- Maintain awareness of current developments in Cardiovascular Perfusion theory and practice, related equipment, training requirements and accreditation standards. Reviews and evaluates technical literature/material, consults with other instructors, attends seminars, lectures and training/continuing education as appropriate. Identifies new trends/programs/procedures and equipment. Functions as department technical resource and as clinical resource for physicians and other health professionals as appropriate.
- Maintain inventories of training supplies and reorders supplies to meet operational needs. Reviews usage, monitors cost effectiveness and make recommendations to Supervisor regarding additions/deletions to reorder points. Compiles statistical information such as usage, patterns and costs for budgetary requirements.
- Provides evidence-based best practice guidance in the development of perfusion practice policy, procedures and guidelines. Maintains various manuals on information such as technical procedures, equipment, training requirements/accreditation standards, and orientation.
- Identifies and promotes the development of relevant clinical research opportunities for perfusion equipment and services. Independently and/or in collaboration with others, develops research proposals and participates in conducting approved research projects through methods such as drafting research proposals, providing information on proposed budgets, collecting/analyzing data, summarizing information and participating in disseminating research findings.
- Performs other related duties as required.
QualificationsEducation, Training & Experience
Graduation from an accredited School of Perfusion Technology, plus three (3) years' recent related experience in cardiovascular perfusion procedures, including one (1) year's experience in an instructional/teaching capacity with adults; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Certified with the Canadian Society of Clinical Perfusionists (CSCP).
Eligible for membership with the Canadian Society of Clinical Perfusionists (CSCP) and/or American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.
