UNIT PROFILE:
The Youth Wellness Centre (YWC) is an exciting new initiative at SJHH that will provide care to youth aged 17-25 who are experiencing significant mental health and addictions concerns. The YWC RN - Mobile Team leads the early intervention function of the program through the implementation of evidence-based screening, assessment and interventions for youth with mental health and addiction concerns who may be engaging with the Mental Health & Addiction sector for the first time. This position is on the YWC's Mobile Team which requires travel and service provision at a variety of community settings.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Mental Health and Addiction Program (MHAP) provides care for patients in accordance with the mission, vision and values of SJHH and the MHAP standards of practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario, and the Canadian Federation of Mental Health Nursing (CFMHN) Standards. Nurses in the Mental Health and Addiction Program are committed to the elimination of stigma and discrimination related to mental health and addiction, as well as reduction of the use of seclusion and restraint in all our services. The principles of person-centred nursing, recovery and trauma informed care are foundational to this specialized nursing practice. As a member of the inter-professional team, the RN- MHAP is responsible for the provision of quality, holistic, specialized nursing care for patients with complex mental illnesses. The RN - MHAP provides safe, evidence-based therapeutic interventions across the care continuum. The RN -MHAP completes assessments, plans and organizes treatment/therapeutic interventions, documents and evaluates interventions. The RN - MHAP models professional leadership and provides decision-making support by collaborating and delegating within the inter-professional team.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario required
• CNA certification in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing (CPMHN(c)), or commitment to complete within 5 years of hire as a condition of employment, is preferred
• Current CPR certificate required
• CPI - Crisis Prevention Training is required
• Minimum 3 years experience in a comparable role working with the defined population (i.e. youth with complex mental health and addictions concerns), preferably in a community-based setting
• Current and demonstrated knowledge of the early stages of mental illness and addictions including etiology, prognosis and treatment modalities required
• Current knowledge of the Mental Health Act, and other appropriate legislation
• Knowledge of SJHH guidelines, Occupational Health & Safety Act, professional standards, including successful completion of WHMIS training
• Knowledge of documentation standards and health record management processes
• Knowledge of assessment and management of co-morbid medical disorders
• Demonstrated knowledge of mental status examination
• Demonstrated knowledge of individual and group facilitation skills
• Demonstrated knowledge of current psychotropic medications, including side effects
• Demonstrated knowledge of conflict resolution and crisis intervention
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
• Demonstrated computer skills including email, MS Word as well as ability to utilize a computer charting system
• Ability and willingness to be mobile and work in various settings including office, community etc.
• Good attendance and work record is essential
HOURS OF WORK: Monday - Friday with extended hours.
