The Role
The Journeyperson – Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic (313A) is responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and optimization of commercial, institutional, and industrial HVAC and refrigeration systems. This role ensures system reliability, performance, and client satisfaction through timely service response and quality workmanship.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
Respond to service calls to diagnose and repair refrigeration and HVAC system issues.
Perform preventative maintenance, including inspection, cleaning, lubrication, and component replacement.
Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, and control systems to identify causes of failure.
Repair or replace defective components such as compressors, valves, motors, and sensors.
Recharge refrigerants, test system pressures, and verify proper operation.
Complete accurate service reports, work orders, and recommendations for clients.
Communicate with clients regarding system performance, maintenance requirements, and improvement opportunities.
Participate in on-call rotation and respond to after-hours emergency service calls as required.
Mentor apprentices and junior technicians in troubleshooting, diagnostics, and customer service.
Ensure compliance with refrigerant handling, environmental, and safety regulations.
Education and Experience
Certificate of Qualification (C of Q) – 313A Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic (Journeyperson).
Gas Technician License – G1
Minimum 5 years of experience in a service or maintenance capacity.
Valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence with insurable driving record.
Proven experience in commercial or industrial HVAC and refrigeration systems.
Ability to obtain a security clearance
Technical Skills and Competencies
Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills for refrigeration and HVAC systems.
Proficient in system charging, leak detection, electrical testing, and controls verification.
Familiarity with modern refrigerants, environmental standards, and system efficiency optimization.
Effective communication and client-service skills.
Ability to work independently and manage multiple service calls.
Commitment to safety, accuracy, and professional presentation.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
Ability to work in varied environments, including mechanical rooms, rooftops, and outdoor settings.
Regular bending, climbing, lifting, and manual handling of tools and equipment.
Exposure to temperature extremes and confined spaces during repair work.
Manual dexterity required for brazing, soldering, and handling mechanical tools and materials.
Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) for extended periods.
Participation in rotating on-call schedule, including evenings and weekends.
