Job Description
The Yard Shunt Truck Driver / Distribution Center Colleague is responsible for safely and efficiently moving trailers and containers within the yard, loading docks, and designated areas to support warehouse and transportation operations. This role ensures that trailers are positioned in a timely manner to maintain smooth loading and unloading processes and minimize downtime for both warehouse and driver teams.
As a Distribution Center colleague, you will assist with receiving, shipping and processing of all goods in an accurate and efficient manner. You will also complete routine documentation of pick sheets, manifests and unload lists.
Key Responsibilities:
Safely operate yard shunt truck (Ottawa/Jockey/Terminal tractor) to move trailers within the yard and between dock doors.
Maintain accurate trailer inventory and communicate trailer movements with the dispatch or warehouse team.
Inspect trailers and ensure they are in safe and serviceable condition before moving.
Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections on the shunt truck daily.
Spot trailers at doors for loading and unloading according to the schedule.
Assist with yard organization and ensure all equipment and trailers are parked safely and in designated areas.
Maintain communication with warehouse supervisors, dispatchers, and incoming/outgoing drivers.
Adhere to all company safety policies, procedures, and yard rules.
Report any damage, mechanical issues, or safety concerns immediately.
Support other yard or warehouse duties as assigned.
Compensation:
The hourly wage for this role is $24.00 - $28.00 per hour depending on experience.
Qualifications
Valid Class 1 or Class 3 driver’s license (depending on jurisdiction).
Clean driver’s abstract with a proven record of safe operation.
Minimum 1–2 years of shunt or truck driving experience preferred.
Strong understanding of yard safety protocols and trailer spotting procedures.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, outdoor environment in varying weather conditions.
Good communication and teamwork skills.
Reliable, safety-conscious, and detail-oriented.
