Job Description
We’re looking for an experienced Intellectual Property (IP) Manager to lead the management and protection of our intellectual property portfolio across Canada and the UK. In this role, you’ll work at the intersection of technology, innovation, and strategy by helping safeguard the ideas and solutions that drive our success in the defence and aerospace industry. Partnering with engineering, legal, and business teams, you’ll ensure that IP is effectively maintained, leveraged, and aligned with business and program objectives. You’ll be responsible for identifying, managing, and protecting the company’s IP assets, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. A key focus will be creating and refining tools and processes to track and manage IP assets across various information enclaves, including secure information environments, enhancing the existing management of licensing and data rights.
As part of the Commercial Services team, you’ll also contribute to initiatives that enhance commercial strategy and governance. Key Responsibilities:
Patent Management
Assist Legal with maintenance, and documentation of patents in accordance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements and internal business practice.
Track the status of IP assets and provide regular reports on portfolio performance to senior leadership.
Manage the licensing of IP to third parties and support the commercialization of IP assets.
Participate as a key member of proposal or program teams to address IP requirements.
Advice and Collaboration
Collaborate with legal teams, inventors, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure effective IP management and protection.
Provide expert advice on IP matters, drawing on current knowledge of IP laws and regulations.
Respond to internal and external inquiries regarding IP issues.
Work with Program Managers to identify, categorize, and safeguard IP generated through projects and innovation activities.
Strategy and Valuation
Develop and implement IP strategies that align with business priorities and drive long-term value.
Identify potential IP assets and evaluate the commercial potential of new technologies.
Support the legal team in defending against potential IP infringements.
Lead efforts to create and maintain tools for tracking IP assets, monitoring compliance, and assessing commercial performance.
Support the Senior Director, Commercial Services with commercial initiatives that integrate IP management and valuation frameworks.
Qualifications
Post-secondary degree with preference for degree in Business, Commerce, Law or other related field
Minimum of ten (10) years of relevant intellectual property experience
Strong understanding and treatment of intellectual property in a Defence context, as well as a solid understanding of patent, trademark, and copyright law
Knowledge of business principles, market trends, and the commercial value of IP
Strong interpersonal and team effectiveness skills with the ability to work collaboratively on a multi-functional team
Strong analytical and research abilities, including data gathering and report writing skills
Delivery of clear, concise and professional communications
Developed business acumen skills to understand impact of advice and actions in order to provide customer service to client groups and to support key business decision making
