Summary:
Under the direction of the Maintenance Superintendent, the Heavy Equipment Technician- Team Lead is responsible as the primary point of contact between the maintenance crew and operations team. The incumbent shall support the reliability and readiness of all rental and company owned assets and must conduct all activities in a manner that supports the mission, vision, and values of the Fort McKay Group of Companies LP.
This is a safety-sensitive position that requires completion of pre-employment/pre-access testing.
Key Focuses:
Support the Maintenance Superintendent by organizing daily assignments and overseeing field and shop repair activities.
Provide coverage for superintendents when they are unavailable.
Provide guidance, mentorship, and hands-on technical support to Heavy Equipment Technicians, Apprentices, and Laborers.
Lead daily toolbox and pre-shift meetings, ensuring safe work practices, task planning, and maintenance priorities are clearly communicated.
Coordinate work progress, monitor repair quality, and ensure mechanical availability targets are met.
Serve as the on-site technical lead for complex diagnostic and troubleshooting work.
Diagnose, repair, and perform preventive maintenance on mining class equipment.
Conduct inspections, component replacements, and overhauls in alignment with OEM standards and SBE maintenance programs.
Maintain detailed service records using the company’s CMMS and digital maintenance tracking tools.
Liaise with superintendents, suppliers, and OEM partners (e.g., Finning, SMS), technical support.
Support equipment readiness for mobilization, demobilization, and component tracking.
Promote and uphold FMGOC's strong safety culture, ensuring compliance with all site specific and company safety policies.
Conduct and review Field Level Risk Assessments (FLRAs) and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) before commencing work.
Ensure all maintenance tasks are completed with proper PPE, lockout/tagout, and environmental controls in place.
Participate in incident investigations and support the implementation of corrective actions.
Assist with scheduling shift coverage, tracking daily work orders, and reporting maintenance progress to the Maintenance Superintendent.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
Journeyperson Heavy Equipment Technician (HET) or Red Seal certification required.
Minimum 5 years of experience maintaining large mining or construction equipment, preferably within the Alberta Oil Sands.
Previous experience in a Lead Hand, Senior Technician, or Working Foreman role is considered an asset.
Strong technical knowledge of CAT 785/777 haul trucks, dozers, and excavators.
Proficient in diagnostics, hydraulics, powertrain, and electrical systems.
Familiar with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and digital service documentation.
Valid Class 5 driver’s license and clean 3 year driver’s abstract required.
Must be proficient in Microsoft office and basic computer knowledge.
Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
Excellent written and oral English skills.
Must be eligible to work on Syncrude, Suncor, Kearl and CNRL sites.
This is a full time position located at Alex and Alice Boucher Fort McKay Industrial Park, North of Ford McMurray. AB.
Work Schedule: 14 on/ 14 off / Days and Nights- 12 hour shift.
