This is an entry-level laboratory role covering a variety of microbiological procedures requiring knowledge in Biology/Chemistry, aseptic techniques, sample preparation, and accurate laboratory practices. Responsibilities include sample preparation (soil, water, or other matrices), media preparation, and straightforward laboratory analyses. Key Accountability/Responsibilities: • Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all laboratory activities.• Review LIMS summary reports to plan and organize daily workloads.• Perform sample preparation steps and required procedures prior to analysis.• Conduct basic microbiological testing according to method requirements.• Identify non-routine samples and seek guidance as needed.• Prepare standards, reagents, media, and ensure adequate supply levels.• Maintain a high level of accuracy in sample handling, preparation, and analysis.• Operate and maintain laboratory instruments (pipettes, PCs, thermal cyclers, sequencers, liquid handling instruments, etc.).• Troubleshoot and correct issues following SOPs and ISO 17025 criteria.• Meet turnaround times (TAT) and ensure samples are analyzed within holding times.• Document sample deviations, non-conformances, or process deviations.• Apply proper aseptic techniques to avoid mislabeling, cross-contamination, or mix-ups.• Provide updates to the Supervisor regarding workstation status and delays.• Participate in developing and updating SOPs and work instructions.• Contribute to validation of new procedures and instruments.• Support continuous improvements to laboratory efficiency and cost control.• Maintain clean, safe, and organized work areas.• Follow all BV safety programs, PPE requirements, and health & safety regulations.• Participate in internal/external audits, safety meetings, and lab meetings when required.• Provide guidance or training to junior staff as needed.• Perform all other duties as assigned.Skills and Knowledge: • Post-secondary education in a scientific discipline (Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry or related).• Experience performing aseptic laboratory procedures.• Strong understanding of sample handling and laboratory QA/QC requirements.• Knowledge of laboratory safety practices for hazardous materials.• Excellent manual dexterity (pipetting, precise handling).• Strong record-keeping, documentation, and calculation skills.• Ability to accurately follow SOPs and work instructions.• Detail-oriented with strong time-management and organizational skills.• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team.• Good communication and problem-solving skills.• Able to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.• Positive attitude and ability to learn quickly.• Strong computer skills (LIMS experience is an asset). Working Conditions• Fast-paced production lab environment with repetitive tasks.• Requires patience, focus, and consistency.• May include standing for long periods and lifting up to 40 lbs.• Flexible hours; shift work and overtime may be required.• Handling of hazardous materials following proper safety procedures.
