Job Description: POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY: The Thrift Store Clerk provides service to customers, sorts incoming product, and assists in the ongoing retail operations of The Salvation Army Lindsay Thrift Store. ACCOUNTABILITIES: The incumbent may perform all, some, or similar range of duties. 1. Operations Greet and interact with customers/donors in a positive, friendly courteous manner and provide excellent customer service. Responsible for accurate completion of all customer transactions including cash and debit sales. Assist with keeping the store tidy, clean, organized and stocked with merchandise. Sort, price, and replenish inventory levels as directed. Possess knowledge of stock in order to respond to customer enquiries by phone/in person. Answer the telephone in a timely, polite, and professional manner. Complete cleaning and tidy up at the end of each shift. Abide by store policies and procedures. Inform your supervisor of all customer complaints, comments and concerns regarding customer service, prices, merchandise, etc. Performs other work-related duties as assigned. 2. Health and Safety Maintain an attractive organized and safe appearance of the store, tidy up and restock shelves, clean, sweep, dust, and mop as necessary; on a rotational basis clean the lunchroom, washroom, and other common areas. Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures. MANAGERIAL/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Reports directly to the Thrift Store Manager Direct reports: none. FINANCIAL AND MATERIAL MANAGEMENT: Responsible for accurate completion of customer transactions including handling cash and debit sales. Contribute to store budgets by maintaining customer service standards. Assist with the materials management of donations/product flow in the thrift store. WORKING CONDITIONS: This is a temporary casual/relief position based on no standard weekly hours of work; work will be offered on an as needed basis. There are no guaranteed hours and shifts could include weekdays and Saturdays. Ability to stand for long periods with frequent twisting, bending, crouching, and reaching is required. Ability to lift/move up to 30 pounds on a regular basis. Thrift Store hours of operation are Tuesday to Friday 9:00-4:00 and Saturday 9-1. Flexibility is required. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Education, Qualifications and Certifications: Completion of Secondary School. Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements: Have a minimum of three (3) months of prior related experience. Cash handling experience is required. Knowledge and experience using a cash register, debit machine and/or credit card processing is a definite asset; basic math skills are required. Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered. Skills and Capabilities: Work as a productive member of the team and independently when necessary. Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills. Self-motivated/disciplined. Lead by example, by demonstrating a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn. Ability to maintain information in confidence and exercise good judgement. Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability. Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills. Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check. Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities. Compensation: The target hiring range for this position is $17.60 to $18.76 with a maximum of $22.51. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
