Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. Our DCFO Office is looking for a two Senior Financial Analysts to provide financially informed analytical support. This is a senior role, and the candidates are expected to understand the financial and strategic impact of business processes, have the ability to recommend tactical and strategic financial and accounting policies that adhere to accounting standards, be able to evaluate current and future business activities in terms of dependencies, risks, financial and strategic implication, including preparation of budgets, forecasts and dashboards.
What will I be doing?
Provides financial and strategic analyses, reporting, and the necessary financial modelling with a focus on driving improved results in revenue, operating and capital costing, budgeting, and forecast
Develop dashboards, presentations, and conduct facilitation and prepare other materials to convey information about financial performance and critical risks to Senior Management in a timely manner
Provides financial forecasting and reporting (e.g., variance and cost-recovery analysis, account reconciliation), analyzes budget and forecast variances, delivers detailed commentaries and reports, supports journal entries and month-end activities, identifies funding shortages, and initiates additional funding requests. Further provides in-depth insights, trends, and actionable recommendations to support informed decision-making and strategic planning
Monitors, creates, and reports on key performance indicators (KPIs), designing new KPIs as necessary to evaluate financial performance and operational effectiveness, and providing insights to drive business decisions and continuous improvement
Conducts financial analyses in support of the business in the assigned division, using proper accounting treatment; provides subject matter expertise in analyzing and responding to inquiries and solving complex problems
Creates and applies reporting templates, financial models and automated processes to meet legal, governance and corporate standards
Assesses the implications of new processes, systems, contracts, and projects from an accounting perspective, (e.g., detecting defects, limitations, cost-benefit implications, and risks prior to implementation)
Develops and writes clear, well-structured business cases and memos, incorporating detailed financial analysis, strategic recommendations, budget tables, and project cost modeling to support key business decisions and funding requests
Proactively drives initiatives, with a forward-looking mindset and a strong sense of ownership to deliver results and continuously improve performance
Champions process improvement initiatives and evaluates the implications of new processes, systems, and projects from a financial perspective
What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?
Completion of a degree in Accounting, Finance, Math, Commerce, or related field – or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent
Demonstrated years’ progressive experience as a Financial Analyst
CPA/CA, CMA, CGA designation is preferred
Experience with Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) principles
Experience providing subject matter expertise to non-finance business leaders, partners. and committee members, assisting in interpretation of financial data for decision-making and providing commentary.
Demonstrated experience in budget development, tracking, forecasting, business planning, and reporting, and conducting financial analysis related to resource allocation is an asset.
Knowledge of business practices, financial analysis and reporting; understands the financial and accounting impact of business processes to evaluate current and future business activities (e.g., audit, legal, and reporting requirements)
MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and Oracle
Outstanding Interpersonal and oral/written/presentation communication skills to develop and present commentary, reports, and presentations on financial analysis to senior management to aid decision-making
Extremely strong writing, critical thinking and analytical abilities
