POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Vice-Principal Research and Innovation, with a dual reporting to the Director, Office of the Vice-Principal Research & Innovation (the Director) the Manager, Finance & Research and Innovations Operations (the Manager) is responsible for ensuring successful oversight of the planning and management of the OVPRI’s financial, information technology, and core research facilities’ resources and activities. The incumbent also participates as a representative of the OVPRI in broader strategic management initiatives related to business continuity planning.
The Manager will work with the OVPRI leadership team (VPRI, AVPRIs, and Directors) to develop and implement strategic plans for the Office’s operations in support of the research and innovation enterprise at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM). With a significant degree of autonomy, the incumbent is responsible for exercising sound judgment and initiative in anticipating and resolving potential financial and related operational challenges that may threaten the ability of the OVPRI to successfully fulfil its mission. This involves advising the OVPRI leadership on a variety of complex financial and operational issues.
The Manager, Finance & Research and Innovation Operations will lead the development of an OVPRI business strategy and standard operating procedures to effectively implement that strategy, including a plan for standardizing and harmonizing the financial management of the core research facilities. Collaborating with the OVPRI leadership team, the Manager, Finance & Research and Innovation Operations oversees the development of the Office’s and core facilities’ budgets, and short- and long-term financial plans, prepares and analyzes financial reports, and is responsible for monitoring all activities (e.g., expenditures, revenues, cost recoveries) in operating accounts, reporting material variances from the budget to the Director and Vice-Principal, Research and Innovation, and recommending corrective measures.
The Manager, Finance & Research and Innovation Operations also serves as a consultant/resource person for faculty and staff on financial matters associated with the development and financial administration of research grant applications and other funding proposals, and will assist with the creation of tools/resources to support the development of budget-related components of research funding applications to external sponsors.
The incumbent is required to have a strong understanding of the internal workings and policies of the University to effectively manage the day-to-day operations and provide support to the OVPRI leadership and other senior faculty administrators, ensuring financial practices are in compliance with University and legislated policies and regulations.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
Education:
University degree in business, accounting, or finance, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Professional accounting designation or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience:
Minimum 7 (seven) years’ experience in an academic setting in increasingly senior roles, dealing with complex or technical issues, including experience in the support of the research, innovation and administrative functions. Demonstrated experience in initiating and managing change. Demonstrated experience in financial management and operations, including budget modeling and forecasting; specifically forecasting research facilities space and equipment planning needs. Extensive knowledge of University policies and procedures; in particular a good working knowledge of fiscal policies and procedures. Demonstrated experience developing and implementing business improvement processes. Significant experience supporting research and innovation initiatives in a university setting, including developing budgets for complex, large-value research grants and supporting related activities (e.g., securing quotes from vendors for equipment).
Skills:
Highly developed financial skills. Computer proficiency and expert level knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Access.

Proven analytical and decision-making abilities; ability to handle stressful and challenging conditions; must be able to deal well with multiple competing deadlines and priorities. Must be able to think creatively to address issues in a unique way to achieve resolution in accordance with University policy and procedures. Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work independently, multi-task, and prioritize work according to demands for self and others. High degree of initiative and self-motivation. Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills. Excellent interpersonal, public relations, negotiation and diplomacy skills.
