Senior Commercial Auto Underwriter - Waterloo, Ontario
The Senior Commercial Auto Underwriter is responsible for managing a diverse underwriting portfolio, making sound risk decisions, and supporting the company’s financial and strategic goals. This role combines hands-on underwriting expertise with market insight, contributing to product development, pricing strategies, and broker relationships to ensure Heartland remains competitive and aligned with industry trends.
What you'll do...
Underwrite and negotiate medium complexity new business, renewals, and policy endorsements. For IRCA, Fleet, and Garage lines of business.
Using technical aspects of insurance: assess and evaluate risk to make empowered decisions.
Seek full understanding of risks; and where facts may be missing, uses additional underwriting tools, applications, reports, discussions, and correspondence to gain increased knowledge of risk.
Participate in, or provide training and development initiatives to, constantly enhancing the quality of decision making.
Use specialized knowledge of own products and pricing to interpret and provide guidance to others (co-workers and distributors).
Provide guidance and training to junior staff where underwriting authorities require referral to senior staff.
Know when to seek guidance from leadership when considering variance from the established guidelines or when underwriting risks outside of a high knowledge area.
Prepare own analysis and recommendations as a basis for discussion with leadership team.
Fully understand coverages and can recognize gaps in coverage, or exposure to loss using knowledge of common terms, conditions, and exclusion of policy coverages
Ensure compliance of own product line with established principles, based on understanding of political, legal, regulatory, and social influences on underwriting.
Refer to other product line underwriters, using awareness of acceptance rules for other related lines of business, to work with them on an overall account approach.
Explain factors affecting loss ratios, severity and frequency and utilize this knowledge to profitably underwrite risks.
Research additional background information on potential customers from sources beyond what is provided in proposals or applications.
Analyze all relevant data using appropriate software, underwriting judgment, and risk analysis tools to determine whether the level of risk is acceptable.
Prepare the terms and conditions of insurance quotations and policies.
What you'll bring...
Minimum 5 years’ property casualty underwriting experience, with a focus on commercial automobile underwriting
General knowledge of other product lines, particularly commercial property.
Comprehensive knowledge of government regulations.
Post secondary degree or diploma.
CIP and/or FCIP designation is an asset.
Familiarity with Guidewire is an asset.
Effective negotiation and interpersonal skills.
Good verbal and written communication skills.
Analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
The ability to work with customers and colleagues from a range of backgrounds.

Goal-oriented, with a growth mindset.
Ability to influence decisions and negotiate strategically
