Rate of Pay: Payband J (Start Rate: $43.61 per hour, plus 8% in lieu of vacation and benefits)

Reporting to the Associate Dean, Building Systems and Sustainability, the incumbent will support academic program delivery for apprenticeship, pre-apprenticeship, post-secondary skilled trades programs and community engagement initiatives by ensuring lab equipment, tools, and supplies are functioning and available for use per the academic area.
The incumbent will also collaborate with the faculty and Associate Dean to recommend technology enhancements and innovation including: create/prototype new lab equipment, trainers and simulators to support development and delivery of course learning objectives and is responsible for the inspection and maintenance of equipment.
The incumbent, in consultation with faculty, is responsible to source inventory and ensure lab consumables are available to students and faculty. The incumbent will be responsible for coordinating supply and consumable orders and required scheduled equipment maintenance within the shop, including sourcing quotes, submitting required paperwork to confirm budget and finance approval, and processing received goods and services as per the college’s procurement policy.
The Technologist is responsible for overall shop housekeeping and developing, maintaining and sharing the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) for lab equipment and processes to ensure the overall health and safety within the labs. They are responsible for ensuring housekeeping and safety process are followed on a daily basis and reporting any violations to the Associate Dean following the policy and procedures.
The incumbent’s working hours may vary from semester to semester depending upon program/course/ level delivery schedules.
What you’ll be doing:
Procurement and set up of inventory, equipment and supplies
Responsible for procuring and scheduling lab equipment and supplies inventory, completing minor equipment repairs, maintaining and monitoring of equipment, tooling, supplies and consumables.
Collaborate with the faculty to recommend technology enhancement and innovation to support program growth and alignment with industry trends following Mohawk College Purchasing and Procurement Policy.
Work with the Associate Dean, Operations Manager, and purchasing officer to work within allocated budget.
Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for lab equipment and lab processes in consultation with various SMEs and manufacturers as required.
Receives ordered goods and materials as per college procurement policy and delivers to shops as required.
Procures and replenishes lab inventories: tools, equipment, hardware, consumables, parts, supplies, etc. as needed; completes ordering process in accordance with established procedures.
Working with faculty, to ascertain whether tools and equipment and work requested will fit program parameters
Completes as-required lab equipment & supply inventory review in accordance with policies and procedures.
Updates lab inventory records within Arcibus asset management system.
Provides training to applicable personnel in relation to lab specific practices and procedures, and safety requirements.
Maintains lab and equipment in clean, safe and orderly condition; checks and maintains safety equipment, secures lab supplies and equipment inventories.
Works with faculty to create supply kits (where appropriate) for exercises and projects.
Schedules tools and equipment to have sufficient test units for practical class; receives tools and equipment and initiates repair orders.
Works with faculty to ensuring enough material and equipment is on hand and set up for expected student activities.
Maintain and repair lab equipment, and fabricate instructional training aids
Equipment types typically include a variety of stationary and hand-held power tools, hand tools, and other trainers, simulators and mechanical devices.
Works with faculty to design/build new training simulators or devices.
Create and maintain a preventative and predictive maintenance schedule for shop equipment and tools to ensure operations during program and apprenticeship delivery to avoid downtime.
Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, replace or arrange for external repairs where necessary.
Obtain and set up special lab equipment and supplies; including performing tests and/or dry runs on lab exercises to verify the desired outcome and results.
Repairs defective tools and equipment and/or teaching aids after classes are finished.
Ensures appropriate and safe storage of lab supplies and equipment.
Assist in orientation of new faculty/students to the lab operations as required.
Maintains applicable lab equipment operation, maintenance and service manuals, parts catalogs, etc.
Follows preventative maintenance schedules and processes, and assists to arrange for the inspection and certification of equipment and tools in accordance with industry regulations and standards.
Researches equipment requests from faculty that support a wide variety of classroom initiatives, new technologies, student projects and curriculum learning outcome requirements.
Obtains necessary approvals, designs & obtains necessary supplies; fabricates training aids; locating or developing instructional material on device operation, testing and diagnosis.
Health & Safety
Facilitates implementation and reinforcement of health and safety practices and standards per College and program/lab requirements.
Identifies potential safety issues, and recommends and/or implements appropriate solutions.
Follows Occupational Health and Safety Guidelines.
Ensure general housekeeping is maintained in all shops/labs.
Identifying potential safety issues, and recommending/ implementing appropriate solutions.
Conducting laboratory inspections, and implementing and coordinating corrective action to ensure compliance with external governing bodies.
Support an environment that Health & safety polices, housekeeping and standard operating procedures are followed.
Creates and updates equipment work instructions, safety manuals and lab Safety Data Sheets.
Creates and/or collaborates to create Standard Operating Procedures for faculty and student reference; diagnoses and/or repairs equipment (where feasible) on demand during lab sessions.
Ensures safe storage, handling, and disposal of all supplies, equipment and materials; follows college processes related to WHMIS and for disposal/recycle of waste; maintains current safety documents and ensures current SDS are filed for newly acquired materials.
Other duties as assigned.
What you’ll bring to the role:
Minimum 2-year diploma; Certificate of Qualification.
Practical experience and a broad general knowledge of the skilled trades sector.
Practical experience supporting the skilled trades through shop and equipment maintenance, understanding standard operating procedures (SOP’s) and excellent working knowledge of health and safety processes.
