Job Description: Position Purpose summary: The Assistant Manager supports the daily operations of the Port Elgin Thrift Store to ensure a positive customer experience, efficient workflow and achievement of sales and donation goals. This role helps with the supervision of employees and volunteers on the day-to-day operations of the Thrift Store and maintains organized and appealing sales floors, and ensures that donations are processed, priced, and stocked in a timely manner. Accountabilities: Operations Assist the Thrift Store Manager with directing all operations of the store to meet sales targets and control expenses while maintaining customer service standards Participate in maintaining and creating an attractive environment for customers, including planning store layout to attract customers, planning attractive window and merchandise displays, deciding on in-store promotions and auctions, ensuring attractiveness of store through ‘Tidy Maintenance’ Serve the customers in a courteous and efficient manner by listening to and addressing customer concerns, suggestions and complaints and discussing with the Thrift Store Manager as needed. Assist the Thrift Store Manager in ensuring appropriate inventory levels based on spot checks of the store and may review weekly sales records Maintain control of inventory by ensuring store donations are retrieved, sorted, and priced appropriately and protect store from inventory shrinkage by close visual monitoring Ensure donations are unloaded, merchandise is appropriately sorted and tagged, shelves are well stocked and transactions at the cash register are completed. Ensure in-store safety for staff and customers (i.e. snow removal, clear fire exits, no obstacles inside/outside store, cleans spills immediately, ensures property is always secured). Communicate regularly with the Thrift Store Manager to ensure consistent adherence to Ministry Unit Store Policies/Promotions and for support as needed Team Management Participate in the hiring, orientating, training, evaluating, recognizing and supervising of staff and volunteers, conforming with local, Divisional, and Territorial standards. Assist the Thrift Store Manager in monitoring employee and volunteer performance and report any concerns/questions to the Manager. Assist in the preparation, posting and maintaining of staff and volunteer schedules in accordance with operational requirements ensuring adequate coverage. Communications Inform the Thrift Store Manager of all customer complaints, comments and concerns regarding customer service, prices, merchandise, etc. Health & Safety Responsible for abiding by The Salvation Army’s Health & Safety Policies and Procedures and work in compliance with the Ontario Health & Safety Act and Regulations, use personal prescribed safety equipment and clothing as directed by the employer, report workplace hazards, dangers, injuries or illness, work in a manner as required by the employer, and report workplace injuries or illness. Adherence to all health and safety standards. Ensure all employees and volunteers comply with all safety procedures as outlined in Health and Safety policies and procedures. Contribute to the safety of staff and customers (e.g. snow removal, clear fire exits, cleans spillage; no obstacles inside/outside the store). Maintain an attractive organized appearance of the store, tidy up and restock shelves, clean, sweep, dust and mop as necessary; on a rotational basis clean the lunchroom, washroom and other common areas. Perform other related duties as required. Working Conditions: This is a regular, full-time position based upon 35 hours per week. Work schedule will vary from week to week and will include weekdays and/or Saturdays. The work schedule is determined in consultation with your manager and may vary according to requirements of responsibility. Flexibility in scheduling is required. Ability to stand for long periods with frequent twisting, bending, crouching and reaching is required. Ability to lift/move up to 40 pounds on a regular basis. Normal Hours of Work: as per operational requirements, generally regular business hours are Monday to Saturday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:15 p.m., and a 1-hour unpaid meal break will be provided where applicable. The hours of work and hours of operation are subject to review as required. Education, Qualifications and Certifications: Completion of Secondary School. Experience and Knowledge Requirements: Have a minimum of one (1) year of prior related retail store experience, specifically secondhand merchandise preferred. Cash handling experience is required. Knowledge and experience using a cash register, debit machine and/or credit card processing is a definite asset. Basic math skills required to calculate discounts and percentages as well as reading skills. Brand awareness would be a definite asset. Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered. Skills and Capabilities: Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills. Compensation: The target hiring range for this position is $17.60 to $20.64 with a maximum of $24.77. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
