WJ Groundwater is the leading construction dewatering and groundwater specialist in the UK with operations in Canada, the Middle East, Poland & the Philippines. We have specialized plant and equipment that allows us to install custom dewatering systems in various environments including from within tunnels and shafts and from the surface.
The Logistics and Yard operations are an essential part of our business and are pivotal in enabling WJ Canada’s ability to execute projects on time and on budget. The primary function of the Chief Mechanic is to maintain and repair drilling and other large machinery, ensuring optimal performance and safety. Responsibilities encompass troubleshooting mechanical issues, conducting regular inspections, and implementing preventative maintenance protocols.

Reports to Operations Manager
Key Areas of Responsibility
Perform maintenance and repair on various types of assets, including drilling equipment.
Diagnose and troubleshoot issues with mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
Ensure that all equipment is operating safely and efficiently.
Maintain all manuals and schematics of heavy equipment and assets.
Maintain accurate records and work order forms for all maintenance and repairs performed.
Communicate with Yard Supervisor to ensure correct and timely ordering of necessary parts and materials for repair and maintenance.
Respond to emergencies on site to repair vital plant assets and equipment.
Assist in the management and training of junior technicians.
Be responsible for own health and safety and that of colleagues, in accordance with current construction guidance and relevant legislation.

Qualifications & Experience
A diploma or certification from a heavy equipment mechanic program or a program in repair and maintenance of similar large machinery.
A minimum of 5 years of experience as a drill rig or heavy machinery mechanic repairing and maintaining track-mounted Soilmec Drilling Rigs and Selwood H Series Pumps
A knowledge of various Soilmec components including top drives, draw works, mud pumps, and BOPs.
The ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics is a must.
Proficient in fabricating and welding, demonstrating strong technical skills and attention to detail.
Water treatment and Dewatering experience with the ability to demonstrate the process is an essential requirement.
Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical issues related to hydraulic pumps and components on Soilmec drilling rigs.
Ability to operate Soilmec track mounted drilling rigs and familiarity with safety regulations and procedures related to rig operations.
A motivated and hardworking individual with good verbal communication skills is essential.
Licensing/Certification in material handling equipment, such as forklift class 1-5, 7 and skid steer.
Warehouse and Construction Yard Environment
Physical Demands: Frequent standing, walking on uneven surfaces, and lifting of items up to fifty pounds. Bending, crouching, reaching, climbing, and operating construction equipment are often required to complete tasks.
Temperature Variability: The warehouse may not be climate-controlled, leading to exposure to extreme temperatures, especially during summer and winter months.
Exposure to Elements: Regular exposure to various weather conditions, including rain, snow, heat, and cold. Work is often conducted outdoors in all seasons.
Noise Level: Expect a moderate to high noise level due to machinery, equipment, and other warehouse activities. Hearing protection may be required for certain tasks.
Safety Protocols: Adherence to all safety guidelines and protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots, is mandatory.
Work Hours: Operations at the yard are scheduled from 7:00am to 3:30pm; however, shift times may vary and can include early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and occasional overtime based on needs.
