About Musqueam
We are traditional hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ speaking people. Today, we are a strong, growing community of over 1,300 members. We live on a small portion of our traditional territory, known as the Musqueam Indian Reserve, located south of Marine Drive near the mouth of the Fraser River. The name Musqueam relates back to the River Plant, the name of the plant is məθkʷəy̓. There is a story that has been passed on from generation to generation that explains how we became known as the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) - People of the River Plant. We have always moved throughout our territory using the resources it provides for fishing, hunting, trapping and gathering. We remain distinct and our cultural practices are strong, despite the devastating impacts of residential schools, colonial laws banning our ceremonies, and other attempts to assimilate our people. Our lands and waters continue to support our cultural and economic practices while serving as a source of knowledge and memory, encoded with our teachings and laws. Position Summary
Reporting to the Manager of Public Works, the Garbage Bin Monitor provides coverage to ensure the safe, orderly, and respectful use of designated Musqueam garbage bin site. This position supports community cleanliness, prevents misuse of waste disposal, and ensures the bin remain accessible for community members.
The Garbage Bin Monitor will work on a rotating shift schedule ( 4pm–12am, 12am–8am) as part of a two-person team. Staff monitor the drop-off area, provide guidance to community members, maintain cleanliness and safety, document issues and incidents, and report concerns promptly.
This is a casual position, available during the Administration office closure from Dec 19-Jan 4, 2025.
Roles and Responsibilities
Provides continuous on-site coverage during assigned shifts to ensure safe and appropriate use of Musqueam garbage bin facilities. Coverage is to be provided via vehicle use.
Greets community members and offers guidance on sorting locations, permitted materials, and safe disposal practices.
Monitors for illegal dumping, hazardous materials, non-community use, or improper disposal.
Documents daily activity logs, incidents, and concerns for reporting to the Manager
Communicates with Security as needed
Performs light cleaning around the bin area as needed
Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Drivers license preferred
Knowledge of the Musqueam community, culture, and values is a strong asset.
Able to work independently while maintaining consistent communication with supervisors.
