The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF Canada) is an independent, not-for-profit organization dedicated to strengthening Canada's relations with Asia.
We are currently seeking applications from researchers and scholars based in the Indo-Pacific to serve as Fellows in APF Canada’s Indo-Pacific Regional Research Program. This program is designed to deepen partnerships and engagement between Canada and experts in the Indo-Pacific, to contribute to Canadian knowledge of the region, and to build trusted regional networks.
About the Program:
The Indo-Pacific Regional Research Program, part of APF Canada’s Indo-Pacific Initiatives and funded by the Government of Canada, offers a unique opportunity for researchers to contribute to policy-relevant scholarship on one of the world’s most dynamic regions. Selected Fellows will conduct and publish original research on priority themes such as regional security, sustainable development, economic security and supply chain resilience, emerging technologies and innovation, energy security, and the green economy—among other topics critical to Canada’s engagement with the Indo-Pacific.
Fellows will also take part in regional and Canada-based events, workshops, and policy dialogues, building professional networks and contributing to the growth of vibrant Canada–Asia research communities.
Duration and Commitment:
The fellowship is a one-year appointment, with the possibility of extension. Publication expectations and other engagements will be defined through mutual agreement between the Research Fellow and the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. A research stipend may be offered, with the amount determined based on the Fellow’s scope of work and agreed deliverables.
Eligibility:
This call for applications is open to researchers from the Indo-Pacific jurisdictions.
Qualifications:
A master’s or PhD degree in a relevant field (e.g. International Relations, Public Policy, Political Science, Economics, etc.).
At least five years of research experience in relevant areas.
A part-time or full-time affiliation with a recognized educational institution, policy think-tank, or foundation.
Status of citizenship or permanent residency in the Indo-Pacific jurisdictions (current residency in these jurisdictions is preferred).
Ability to travel to Canada (and possibly within the Indo-Pacific region) and facilitate the required travel documents to participate in events and programming.
Application Requirements:
The application deadline is Tuesday, December 31, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. (PT).
Resume detailing your academic background, skills, and professional experiences.
Cover Letter explaining why you are interested in joining the program (max. 3 pages). The cover letter should also address the following:
What do you see as a major challenge facing Canada in its relationship with the Indo-Pacific?
How would having a better understanding of Canada and its foreign policy and Indo-Pacific engagement benefit your research or otherwise help you in your current career?
What research topic(s) do you hope to pursue as part of this program?
We appreciate the interest of all applicants, but due to the anticipated high volume of applications, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted to schedule an interview by January 31, 2026. Thank you for your understanding.
